I think I picked the last of the green beans last night. The tomatoes are looking good and getting bigger but not ready yet. Melons are starting to blossom. Cukes are still going crazy.
This weekend I started my first batch of crock pickles. I've never made them before. I'm super excited because it's been awhile since I've fermented anything too.
I used a recipe for the brine. For the pickling spice I used: Dill seed, clove, rose hips, juniper berries, smoked ancho pepper flakes, and mustard seed. I have no idea why I chose that mix but it smelled good do I went with it!
I haven't tried fermentation yet. We just make regular canned goods with vinegar. Mainly pickles and pickled okra. Okra is just starting to produce. Hopefully it takes off soon.
I was inspired to start fermenting by some members here. I found it to be fairly easy and I like the taste. Fermented black bean dip is delicious! I also like kimchi, kombucha, and sauerkraut.
In fact, I think I might go back through some of the recipe archives here and get some more fermenting ideas!
4.5" of rain today. Glad we have Sandy soil here rather than the clay back in KY. We'd be flooded there. We've got rain predicted for the next 2 weeks...
We have sandy soil too. It is like beach sand and it has been hard to get a garden going, but I think we are there. LOL We moved from black land, a gooey, sticky, suck-your-truck-out-of-sight-call-the-bulldozer-man, black clay that turned to iron with big cracks when it was hot and dry. After that mess, I'll happily take the beach sand! Just wish we had the ocean to go with it......but that's a couple hundred miles away.
Congrats on the rain, we are in a week of 100+ degree heat. Some rain here would be welcomed!
Wow, that is a wonderful rainfall! We're supposed to get thunderstorms here, or so they say?!? Apparently we had one yesterday, but I didn't see it or rain lol Hope it will come soon, we've been unusually warm and dry the last few weeks.
It's been a crazy summer. My truck was totalled because I parked it in the driveway and our oak tree dropped a limb on it.
Our 16 year old dog Julie also just passed. We'd had her since she was a puppy. Our 14 year old Annie hasn't been doing good for about a month but she's rallied after lots of nursing and she's bouncing around again.
Hopefully if the rain lets up, we can reroof the shop in October. It will be nice to get a major project knocked off the list.
