I agree with OFG (Bastyr was one of the colleges I looked at.. for fun)
You could probably go to the campus, walk up to a student and ask him or her if they or anyone they know could give you a quick work-over. :p

BE careful how you ask that - no telling what you might get yourself into.
Seriously, I have those aches all the time. No fun. I feel for you.

My earth suit had it's back operated on in 1962.

Since then I have worked with several chiropractors and such, but the best thing that I have found are certain exercises and walking.

I can strongly recommend the little book:

Treat Your Own Back

Here's a web site.

http://www.treatyourownback.com/subscriber/

I have added about two exercises to this book, and all exercises combined take a whopping 10 minutes on the living room floor. My little exercise program is more of a prevention so if you are in sever back pain you need to work with a health professional.

To my back exercises I have to add one for my hip, but I only use it when I get some hip pain.

A few years ago I had this base of the neck problem like you are describing, BH. I found out that the same author of Treat Your Own Back also has a book titled Treat Your Own Neck. Here again I found some excellent neck exercises, but I do them throughout the day. Very, very helpful!

I still visit my chiropractor once in awhile. He told me that if his patents would exercise and walk, he would lose up to 70% of his business. He also told me that almost all of the people who had a back surgery (disc fusion) surgery like mine had to have another surgery about every 8 years. So on I go with my little plan.

These are things that I learned over the last 30 years. Hope it helps someone else. It works for me.

Right where my back meets my neck. And a bit across my shouIders, esp my right one. It has been Iike this for 3 days now and hasn't improved.

What can I do?
I would go for a biomechanical massage. Is your back straight? Can you stand in front of a plumbline to ask your hubby if you are straight? And have level shoulders and hips?
I prefer the chiropractic massage over adjustments.

I purchased an inteli gel pillow about 9 years ago and it was the best purchase I ever made for my neck. I have recommended it to many over the years and for those who ventured to spend the money they were so grateful for the pain relief they provided.

This pillow is a contour pillow that has an internal air pillow that you fill to adjust to you specifically to fill that space between your neck and the width of your shoulder when laying on your side. The rest of the material is not the squishy temperpedic foam but structured gel that will hold up forever yet compresses and supports to you individually, then rebounds when you are off it. When you lay on your back it promotes the natural curve of the neck spine.

It has saved me alot of money by not needing as many chiropractic visits and massage

This video explains pillows. Its about $100, best Franklin I ever spent.
it is explained at 5:58 on the vido scroll

or you could call me for a massage. I only charge $25 so those who don't have big bucks can afford one... the hitch? travel expenses may apply :D

Four things helped my neck pain - I'd get crampy nervy pain in my neck and shoulders on a regular basis.

1. Getting the chemicals out of my diet. That reduced pain all over, to an amazing degree, including reducing the neck pain episodes and severity. Also slowed the progression of arthritis.

2. Getting a good pillow and bed. Both the mattress and pillow have to be right. My pillow is a contour memory foam pillow. Someone gave it to us, terrific blessing, that!

3. B-12. If you are low on B-12, everything hurts more. It affects nerve pain signals - you can get random nerve pain if you are severely low, but if you are just moderately low, you'll have accentuated pain from positional episodes, arthritis, etc. B-6 can also affect this, because it affects how your body uses resources.

4. Neck exercises. Just relaxing stuff. Drop your head to each side, and stretch gently, drop it forward and do the same. If you do that several times a day - any time you feel it start to tighten - it helps avoid neck cramps.

If you have good health insurance, and this is an ongoing thing, you can ask your doctor for a referral for 1-2 physical therapy sessions. They'll teach you a series of exercises to strengthen and relax the muscles involved. Insurance usually covers this, usually won't cover massage.

Who's your lippiest horse? Does anyone near you have a TWH? (They're lippy!) Throw some sugar on your shoulders/neck and let them go to town. My arabian is "helpful" and is super good about trying to get out back knots.

I feel you, I have that classic "hunter" back, you know, exaggerated arch, and I have to go up to my mare and curve along her chest/neck to stretch it opposite. They are the best cheap massagers out there.

Good plan. :)

Actually, I guess I know why it annoys me. I used to do web promotion, but I wouldn't stoop to cheap quick useless posts like that. Nor to spamming comments on someones blog, etc. I made sure to take the time to develop useful content, which I also got paid for.

Not my line of work anymore, but it still mildly irks me to see it, when it "invades" an otherwise very useful forum. :)

Still, to each his own I guess. :)
