I've been wanting to do something like that for our pet rabbit. I am just afraid he'd get out from under, if I down secure really well. We have an x-pen for when our dog was a pup and have found many uses for it. I have considered putting the rabbit in it. But so far have been unwilling to take the chance.

a simple spring loaded hasp like the ones on the end of a leash would solve the door opening problem atleast

I use one like that, we use the smallest one w have as it fits well between my raised beds, one or two rabbits at a time so I swich them daily;).
