I know a lot of know what they are, but some newbies may not.

Freecycle is a recycling site where people can post free classifieds to offer unwanted items to their local community. You can also find some cool things on their as well. Everything is to be offered and given for free. Go to http://www.freecycle.org/ to find a group near you.

http://www.craigslist.org is also a free classifieds, though they do have a free section, most things do cost money. However you can find local items.

I visit both sites each day, never can tell what you'll find!!

You can also visit the Habitat for Humanities website here---> http://www.habitat.org/cd/env/restore.aspx to find a "Restore" near you. A Restore offers materials left over from builds or donated to HFH and offer for sale to the public. Most materials are offered for much less then retail and proceeds fund HFH.

I love freecycle.org and cheapcycle. Good way to get things and get rid of things you don't need. One man's (woman's) junk is another man's treasure. Recycle love it.

After noticing many posts on our local FreeCycle board for plants, both offers & wanteds, I started a new Yahoo group to serve as a "FreeCycle for plants" in our community. You can check it out at http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/PBPlantExchange and perhaps you'll want to start one for your area. Things grow so fast & year 'round here, gardeners usually have enough to share. All of us on the group are close enough to drive to each other's places, so we can share plants without having to pack & ship them.

It looks similar to Craigslist.

For any Ontarioan who lives near, or happens to be travelling past, Georgetown (sorta SW of Mississauga, on hwy 7 between Brampton and Acton) I would recommend Wastewise.

They don't have a 'real' website but there is some info at http://peel.cioc.ca/details.asp?RSN=15768

Partly they accept recyclables and junk; but (here is the more relevant part) they resell any vaguely-resellable junk and stuff that is donated. Lots of books, household items, old electronics and computers and parts thereof; some furniture (much very junky but they get a respectable # of nice things sold at incredibly low prices, they just don't stay in the store long!), garden items including in fall and wintertime a jillion plastic plant pots, and sporting goods; and anything else that people find when cleaning out their garages or that they failed to sell at a garage sale.

It is like a junkier version of a junky thrift store. I mean this in a good way

I used to volunteer there but now live too far away . I swing by there a few times a year to say hi to people and glom useful items to make into chicken feeders and such (and books! books!), and mourn the distance and the price of gas
