The restaurant owner came through!!! He dropped off 2 big boxes of stuff today, all had been kept in the walk-in and was all nice and cold. I got carrot peels that the goats got most of, and lots of fish (breaded scrod, bass or salmon skins, and salmon chunks) and some shrimp shells....not sure if I should offer those shells, so I will probably bury them in the garden when I plant my corn. I got various pieces of cake, lots of pasta, cantaloupe rinds, and about 2 gallons of cottage cheese! And a few containers of unidentified sauces.
I'd already started soaking some pellets in whey from today's cheesemaking projects, so we added that to a five gallon pail and brought about 4 gallons of goodies to the pigs....they went nuts! I put several bags of fish in the fridge and freezer, not yet sure of how often we will get this bounty, and the cottage cheese is in the downstairs fridge for the pig's breakfast.
I ground some whole corn today to ferment with whey to transition them off pellets, as I only have about a quarter of a bag left and don't want to buy any more.
If/When you get your cattle prod be sure to make a special noise with your mouth - something LOUD and easy for you to reproduce - EVERY TIME you zap a pig. There may come a day when you are stuck in a dangerous situation without your zapper and having them associate a noise that you make with the shock may save YOUR bacon.
Great advice!!! I forgot about the cattle prod...briefly. I haven't had the need to go in the pen since I chained the feed tubs to the fence, but the time will come, soon, when they dump their water and roll the tub too far from the fence...it will be 110F and dh will be gone all day....so gotta get that tool to keep me safe. Poodles just don't cut it. Great for rats, mice, squirrels....not so good with saving mama from a buncha hogs!
I'd say the hogs aren't hungry tonight!
I just filled a five gallon pail a bit more than halfway with cornmeal and added a half gallon of whey, then filled it up with water to ferment. New experiment.
I ground another bucket of cornmeal tonight and it is in the cellar with more of the whey in it and some water to get it all bubbly and sour. I'll do another bucket tomorrow until I know how much I'll need. No more pellets! Let the cheese making commence!
actually them porkers are starting to get brave and one of them touched me ON THE LEG with his gross little pig nose. i think i have swine flu now. augh!
actually Kai is dying to get right in there and taste them pigs. hee hee hee
Tomorrow will be six days since we got food from the restaurant guy. Yikes. I was hoping for more. I wrote a thank you note and picked a bouquet of culinary herbs from my garden (about ten different ones) and dropped it off at the restaurant today. It was closed, but I drove around back and sure enough, there was a car parked there. So I rang the bell and an older gentleman came to the door. I asked him to leave the card and herbs for the owner. Hopefully, it will prime the pump!
Meanwhile, they are eating more cornmeal fermented with lots of whey. I found a five gallon pail of soybean meal that is several years old but smells just like it did the day I bought it. I decided to add a couple of handfuls. With some regret. They need protein and hog pellets will have soy....and they don't need to reach breeding age.....and thyroid issues will make them fat......which is good.....and they will be off soy for several weeks/months before their trip to freezer camp.....That is how I justified it. But I still don't like it. Soy, that is. :/
