I had one right below my thumb that would pinch nerves and make my hands go numb. I had to have my surgically removed. I accidentally whacked it one time, because I couldn't do it on purpose and it burst, but it actually came back bigger. Mine got to be about ping pong ball size on the back of my wrist and hurt like the devil. If they do surgery, make sure they explain everything. I thought it was just going to be a quickie in the office thing. It was an actual surgical procedure where they totally knocked me out - guess they really had to mess around the nerves to make sure they got it all. That was about 8 years ago, and every now and then it will still hurt, but it hasn't come back, yet.

Good luck.

Hmmm, I think I might just see if I can get it to go away on it's own. Almost sounds like the 'cure' is worse than the cyst.

I just was thinking about this again. I had chronic carpal tunnel, and a friend said her doc told her to take Super B Complex to control hers. After I started taking the B complex, not only did it help with the carpal tunnel, I also haven't had another ganglion cyst. Maybe it was just a coincidence, I dunno.

Instead of whacking it, you could try massaging it. I know it's painful to touch but a gentle massage...and I mean starting out gentle...and then intensify the pressure as you get used to the contact. You could even desensitize the area with a muscle rub ointment first to distract from the pain while you are doing this. Sometimes they will burst from the massage and then the added pressure...I've seen doctors do this to patients.
