I made a friend at church who has literally flooded me with kindness and goodies. Tons of canning jars and supplies, firewood, used lumber, about 600 lbs of red turkey wheat and a grinder, stock racks for my truck....you name it, they have given it to us! They even referred us to a guy who gave me 12 laying hens, Red Stars, 10 mo. old. Nice folks!

I also found out that a husband of one of my patients had to let his blackberries go this year due to health reasons. He normally picks about 20 gal. of berries from these thornless vines. I spoke up and offered to pick them for him if I could take some home to use and to sell at my roadside stand. He said he can't eat them anyway due to one of his health conditions. I'm hoping to be able to use those berries next year.

I love the friend network and I try to be generous with eggs all over the tri-county area...this keeps you in the minds of folks who may want to get rid of things. Plus, I just like to do it! :)

Ohiofarmgirl, those are my mother's exact words as I was growing up! "Get out there and make friends!"

Funny you would bring this up today...I just had my sheep Dolly sheared professionally by a really old man from New Zealand. His shears weren't working properly so he took out his manuel "blades" and got the job done in the time he would have been able to do two to three sheep. He never complained as he was stooped over sweating. A real nice man.

I got a dozen of my freshest eggs and gave them to him when all was said and done. The look in his eyes when I gave him those eggs said it all. He shook my hand and said his wife would be so happy, they haven't had fresh eggs in ages.

Bee--That's awesome that you're connected with some nice folks finally! I agree with what you say about sharing all you can of your own just for its own sake, but also it brings so much back to you, doesn't it?

BBH--What an awesome story! I love those reciprocal times when both people are so happy.

People around here know that we appreciate anything free, so we get offers to pick people's fruit when they're on vacation or too overwhelmed with it. We love sharing our garden produce, sometimes meat chickens and our eggs. Sometimes we even swap plants (like tomatoes) for things we don't have. I love this swapping around stuff!

OFG--I think you are so right about local producers being very generous. Almost every single one I have met has had an incredible spirit of sharing and generosity. I think it's just so much fun for all involved to enjoy each other's wonderful products and get rid of the ones you have too much of.

Well, I need to get back to work. I need to make time to pick a friend's pear tree. She says she must have about 50 bushels on it--we will see :D

what delia said, Big Brown Horse!!!

dontcha just love making someone's day?

your mother was right on - i have a hard time with new people so its great to hear encouragement from others. but after some practice... i've learned to look forward to it. and after a while my husband stopped being shocked and horrified when i ask him to stop the car! turn around! i wanna talk to that guy.... one of the best things about living out here. as long as you get out of the truck with a big smile and sayin' 'hi neighbor' they most likely wont shoot ya
;-)

me&thegals - let us know what you do with all those wonderful pears!

hey everybody!!

so i had such a great day i had to go and dig up this old thread... even in these difficult times its great to be reminded that there are good and decent people out there. and how we can all help each other out.

one of my buddy's owns are farm stand and he gave the call that he was shutting down for the winter and did i want to come and get a few things???

HOLYMOLY there was so much stuff we had to use 2 trucks and my superduty was sagging. we were totally the hobo trucks on the way home - it was piled high in the back and i had so much i practically had stuff in my lap. then it took all afternoon to load out.

a few of the goodies:

* 15 bales of fresh dry straw!!!!!!!! perfectly good straw!!!!
* 3 50lb feed bags of baby pumpkins and gourds
* about 50 sugar pie pumpkins
* 100 lbs of seed potatoes (red pontiac)
* 30 pounds of taters ready to eat
* 20 bundles of corn shocks
* a crate of indian corn
* 3 five gallon buckets of perfectly good squash (acorn and butternut)
* 20 bags of pulp from his cider
* 3 gallons of his extra good cider

AND

we're going back tomorrow to pick "all the apples you can use" - he still has some on the trees

we stood there shocked and humbled at his generosity. he wouldnt take one dime from us...he was just glad to have the stand cleaned out for the winter and he didnt have to haul any of it.

we even tried to give him a ham from when we get ours back. he's vegan and wont even take any eggs.

"no really, friend, we have to pay you"

nope.

he was just happy to have things taken away.

how about them apples?
:)
