I've only canned in jars I've bought or been given. But I use the jars of anything I buy, even the plastic ones, to keep other stuff. And wine bottles! I have yet to run across any bail type jars or bottles but I would snatch them up in heartbeat!

The glass jars are perfect for ferments, the plastic ones I reserve for dry foods, like jerky or rice or dried mushrooms.

Also use the glass ones for coffee mugs, since the set of 8 I had all wandered off and I don't feel like shopping for more. DH likes a LOT more milk in his than I do, so we can tell at a glance which is whose.

LOL! I'm glad that I'm not the only one to drink out of jars. The guys make fun of me all of the time for my pickle jar. I never have to worry about someone else snatching my drink though!

I save and reuse store bought jars and even other type containers all the time. Plastic margarine/cool whip tubs are great to freeze leftovers. Empty spice containers for saved seeds, etc. Glass or plastic jars to store bread/cracker crumbs, etc.

I have used glass jars including reusing the lid that came with it but only one more time and usually only for jams or pickles that I don't put in a canner. But it depends on the type of lid and rubber in the seal. I only reuse the lids that have the "seal button" that is similar to regular canning lids(I don't reuse these-only the store bought) and if the rubber inside isn't damaged. :hide but thats just me

edited to include "kimchee?? eeeeeeewwwwwww :sick " my dad used to eat that crap I never could get past the smell
