Here for another update! I'm really sorry about being absent...I really miss talking with you all and reading your updates. i do look in on you and see what's going on, but between work and home stuff I'm not on the computer for fun stuff very often.
So - what's new around here. Well.....
I've applied for a new position at my work. If I get it we're talking a nice raise and more "fun" work. I won't necessarily have a desk job anymore, but I'll still have a desk to work at - does that make sense? i think in OFG terms it's called "A Corporate Monkey".
We butchered up a cow~ not one of our cows, though. Someone Big G knows had a heifer that was getting beaten up pretty badly so he gave it to us for free. We split her with a friend, literally, and ended up with 194 # of steaks, sirloins, burger and soup stuff. It was A-MA-ZING to watch. I was only sorry I wasn't there for the kill shot. i'm told it's not fun to watch but I did tell the slaughter house I'd like to see it once just so I can say I have. this weekend we're going to grill up some steaks and entertain some city slickers.
I met a girl who just came to work with us & she and her hubby are from Staten Island. i asked her to come over for a fire and she said....get this...."A fire??? Outside???"
I died.
Good thing she has a sense of humor! she said living out here is surreal and she never wants to go back to the city. I told her to wait until she comes here to make that call. HA!
Sir Loin, our jersey, has a date at the slaugter house in the end of September. he'll be mostly burger, but still good to say the least! I'll be sad to see him in the freezer because he was our bottle calf, but hey - a carnivour...I mean - a girl has to eat!
We got turkeys! Big G built the turkey hut all by his lonesome. I was going to help, but in the midst of work and home my grandmother has been ill so i've been taking her one day ever weekend to ease the stress on my mother and aunt/uncles. He did a great job, though! and soon we'll have some awesome gobblers to munch on!
Here's some pictures:
April is still the same. Skin and bones, but wants to eat and drink so I just let her be.
Fudgie is quiet as a mouse. No more hollering at me to come and milk her, which I actually miss. She was quite easy to dry up, something I wasn't expecting.
The keets have been moved outside. I love our outdoor brooder. So. Much. it makes my life so easy now.
but I still remember when they were just itty bitty babies sleeping wherever they could.....
Hmmm...what else?....the chicks are really big! I'm thinking I was wrong on assuming some were roosters....aggieterpkatie just has funky chickens, that's all!
If you ever need someone to split a cow with you (like you'll have a shortage of people that would.....) let me know. I'd be happy to buy even 1/4! Just keep it mind I guess.
Will keep your grandma in our thoughts etc. for the job!
I think you are going to have some fun with that new coworker...
Nice deal on the beef! I got 80 pounds of grass fed ground beef at a discount for the freezer when our meat guy had to cull a cow from the herd. We use ground beef more than anything else so it worked out great for us.
