I can agree with that Glenolam - it does come down to a personal choice and comfort level and there isn't a proven wrong/right method that fits everybody. Nothing about raising goats has a one size fits all method :p

Now, now ladies.

I found that whole thing very informative.

I LEARNED that I do not like the figure 8 method. I'm a less is more person and agree with the notion that a little scur is not going to harm a mutt dairy goat too terribly much, which ismy style.

I think that burn to the skull method looked excessive to me, in my inexperienced eye. But it just looks like too much tissue is being effected when it isn't 100 percent necessary.

And if you decide to do it you are BAD and WRONG ! ;)

Well, of course no 2 people do things the same when raising animals, but why create a bigger wound than needed? IMO there's just no reason to do that. And I don't understand the argument that it's easier on the kid. Burning to get a copper ring takes less time than burning down to the skull.

I do like the figure 8 method on bucks though. I have a really good photo from another forum that I could email to anyone interested. It really shows how the horns on bucks (especially swiss breeds) grows out from the base of the horn bud.

And scurs are a PITA. My buck wasn't disbudded properly and he's got scurs that break off now and then. I'd rather take time to do a proper copper ring/figure 8 than get scurs, but if it was a choice between scurs or exposed skull, I'd probably go w/ scurs.

BTW, our first buckling had a seizure after we got him (we got him at around a week old, the day after he'd been disbudded. We assume his brain got overheated. He seized and hit his head which caused arterial bleeding at the burn site. NOT something pretty. :(

ETA: I wasn't the one who disbudded my buck, he was done before I bought him.

That's tripping me up too. If you burn to a copper ring first, how is that taking longer than burning to a white ring?

I'm wondering if there are genetic lines which cause some goats to scur more than others?

Sorry, helm...nothing said here was meant to offend you. But if it did, I'm sure I can speak for all of us when I offer up apologies.

That said, we were commenting on the whole mess in general and trying to make light of a tense situation. I won't take back anything I've said because I don't feel as though I've done anything wrong.

I didn't feel the need to air anything on your thread or over on mine at BYH so I decided to air it in my journal.

Glenolam when are you going to castrate your bucklings? I'm thinking 8 weeks.

I already see a little humping going on....but no real action!

I set up a jungle gym for mine in the snow yesterday, man did they ever have fun. I would post more pictures but I'm all out of space.

What does everyone do about that, delete old pictures?

I've never even figured out how to upload pics through this site, so I just put mine on photobucket and then link the IMG code directly to my post here.
