I thought this topic had a quite a bit to do with what we talk about on here... So many of us here live on a low income or lower finances.. Has this affected your relatioship with those around you at all?

Since when do money and material items become more important than the universal emotion of love?? It's crazy!

(I don't like Tyra but interesting video nonetheless)

I like Tyra!

love that show Americas Next Top Model :p

money is important in life. most can't do without it.....but to train your kid to marry only for money.....hmmm crazy for sure!

parents are kinda nuts nowadays.

I will tell Nicole that a good financial minded hubby sure wouldn't hurt at all...lol...but love is the most important. And she will be financially savvy so I doubt she will want someone who isn't with a like mind for a relationship....I don't know, just a guess lol

I didn't look at the link but I think it is important to raise children to know that money comes and money goes.....be prepared to enjoy and appreciate the good times and be prepared to weather some bad times because you WILL have your share of those :(

BB we lost everything a couple of years ago and have had hard times before that when we were pretty broke because we were self employed and business was tough, for whatever reason (no one is immune to cycles in business). We found that our *friends* scattered like roaches when there was no money.

Suffice it to say that we are a bit more selective in choosing friends nowadays!

WOW Dace that happened to you?

that is terrible.....most of your "so called friends" kept their distance just because of financial troubles. That is just awful.

Hubby was self employed, had a national contract with Home Depot, over 50 employees.....and the economy went sideways. We were one of the first to be hit because our industry (landscape design) was closely linked to construction.

We scaled back and scaled back some more, we dropped employees and moved into a smaller facility, then moved into the office in our home, I became the sole employee :( . We did everything we could to save our business but it was like a rolling snowball and there was just no stopping it.

We lost our house and loads of *friends* because they could not understand what was happening to us and probably just didn't know what to say or do.

Remember that "marrying for love" is a fairly recent idea. Historically, marriages were business arrangements, so maybe we're just coming full-circle. ;)

Haven't had a chance to watch it yet...

but I am MUCH more likely to marry for money than love. LOL. If I can find someone who wants to afford me, I'm so there.

Okay watched it... and if you are raised really poor, I can easily see marrying out of your class and into a higher class important. That's what half of history has been about: how do you beat the class race? Marry higher.

And if I met someone I really fell in love with, I might marry even with no financial prospects. But if I met someone rich willing to have me, I'd overlook a lot to snag that cash!!! :D

Considering that the US has gone from making things to basically only buying things, I'm not surprised. It's all about buying the latest gadget and having the latest fashions. In that case, I guess you better make sure to marry money. When things fall apart, I wonder what all those people are going to do. This country is going downhill fast and not everyone is going to have a job.
