Grandpa had a garden
as far back as I remember

And in the fall, we had fresh greens
in November or December

Grandpa had a garden
in spring we had our corn

We would shuck and shuck
sometimes we'd be in the barn

Grandpa had a garden
on our knees we'd dig potatoes

We all worked very hard
the mason jars were filled with tomatoes

Grandpa had a garden
I'd love to run and hide

No one could see me in the corn
even if they were along side

Grandpa had a garden
the greenbeans were delicous

I grew up to be very tall
my food was so nutritous

Grandpa had a garden
and Momma had her's too

Grandpa went to Heaven
Grandpa, I love you!

Grandpa had a garden
I bet he has one still

I'm sure I'll see it
when I"m done with my own garden.....if it is God's will

Thanks. I wrote it a few hours ago, because I needed to help my 2nd grader learn how to make a poem and it had to be about seeds, gardens or the like, so I told her to start writting and basically we needed to rhyme every other line's last word. But as I wrote, I was writting about my childhood memories. I lost Grandpa on my last birthday in February, so its still very fresh for me. I have a hard time reciting the last few lines. But a child learns what he/she lives. My little girl chose to write hers about flowers.....and we went with the idea of rhyming it with towers, and were going to figure a way to sneak in the idea or fact that she planted sunflowers, but then she rampaged thru my pantry to look for more seeds and wanted to plant other flowers........the lesson went in a completely new direction.

Rhoda_Bruce, aren't those the best lessons? The impromptu ones, where we follow our children where they lead us.:)
