I've been wanting to open my own business for years now, but have yet to find the right concept. Over the years I've considered: B&B, drive-through coffee shop (back before Starbucks was on every corner), a bar, a breakfast restaurant, an inn with bar and restaurant, a personal cataloging service (for insurance purposes), an organizing service, and various farming enterprises (fruit, X-mas trees, goats, herbs, etc).
My latest thought is to open a bakery/pastry shop with a simple lunch sandwiches menu. I think I've decided over the years that I my passion and skills lie with food. I am currently a supervisor for a large pharmaceutical manufacturing plant and while making life saving drugs is an honorable thing, I am just not passionate about it. I would need some additional training before I would open a bakery (I make some mean breads and desserts but I'm no professional). The only trick is to get my training and experience without giving up my high-paying day job. I also need some more retail/business experience (I haven't worked in a restaurant since I was in high school). I know I would take a pay cut leaving my current job, but I think it would be worth it in the long run.
a couple of us have dumped our "big" lives.. i gave the corporate world the finger about 5 years ago and frankly dont miss it at all. sometimes i miss the money but only because i need something - but then we use creativity to work something else out.
do some research to get into the right mindset. read "Your money or your life" if you havent already...and there are some other good resources out there.
and there are some great threads on here for folks who, for what ever reason, had to start over.
the biggest resistance you'll get is from your well meaning family and friends - who will think you are a loon. you might be - but if you hang around here you'll be in good company.
