Well friends, there it is. I will be posting my new project that I will be starting today, a chicken coop and run. I was given an old chicken coop yesterday and tore it down this morning. I intend on building a coop for 20 or so hens for egg production. I am still working on that @$%^ tiller so I can put in my garden. Never a dull mon=ment around this nuthouse. So I'll be back...Hopefully

We are in the process of having our family become self sufficient. We are expanding our house, and doing it as economically as possible. We are starting a chicken coop so that we can provide eggs and meat for ourselves and others around. We arew gonna put in a truck garden as soon as I get the tiller fixed for the tractor(hosed up gearbox-waitin on parts)and my wife and 15 year old daughter are starting their own sewing and alteration shop i n our home. They make dresses, all sorts of clothing, christening gowns and pretty much everything else you can think of. we owe nothing on our house, we pay for everything that we use for the expansion as we go and owe nothing on any of the vehicles. I own two harleys, but am seriously thinking of selling them, cause I just don't ride them as much as I used to. Well. gotta go eat.....ma's hollerin...:)

Whats a "truck garden"? I would love to have a sewing shop. It sounds like heaven to sit all day and sew, something I enjoy, and get paid for it.

I say keep one Harley and sell the other. That way you can still ride for fun but yet still stash some cash.

It's growing enough produce to sell on the side of the road (out of the back of your truck).

Well, Got the tiller fixed and actually got something done today. Tilled the whole garden, moved the water tank(old military surplus 500 gal fuel tank)with a lot of help, set it up on the stilts and filled it up from the creek, laid out the rows and hills and basically got it ready for planting thursday. Gotta go to the neurosurgeon tomorrow for a 8 week followup from back surgery. I am picking up a load of organic material I will use in the garden for fertilizer(gotta multitask to make the trip more economical)and gotta pickup more mud for finishing the drywall in the house. As for the water tank, I was able to pick up the tank for 25.00 and the gas to go get it. The tank is fiberglass and the top was damaged, so the fire department that had it could no longer use it. I could use it because I wont move it now that it is set. It had a 2" connection in the bottom so I installed a 2" valve and plumbed it so I could passively water my garden with gravity feed. I filled it from the creek that is about 150' from the garden with an old "manhole" pump that I bought at auction. It pumps around 50 gallons a minute, so ten minutes of electricity is a whole lot cheaper than the EXPENSIVE water through the meter.Tomorrow mornin before going to OKC, I hope to start building the chicken run for the pullets and hens that I am buying. I have been looking at all of the plans and suggestions for a chicken house and have come to the conclusion that at first, simple is better and will work on a larger and nicer house as I go along. I was at first just going to have egg production, but quite a few people have expressed interest in free range or non medicated chickens, so I am going to start with about 25 or so and try it at least once. I will be starting a homemade chicken plucker and if it works well, I may offer to build one for someone if they want it. I do enjoy building stuff like that. If the reader has not picked up on it yet, I am the type of person that cannot sit still for long. I get fidgety and have to be doing something almost all the time. I hope to be posting pictures soon as I am gonna pick up a digital camera tomorrow. TA TA for now..........:)
