That's very true, with some breeds it can be very hard to tell. I have some light Brahmas, and right up until they get droopy sickle feathers, or start to lay eggs, it can be hard to tell with them. The hens get some heavy, somewhat droopy, saddle feathers, and can look very roo-ish. Then suddenly they're laying eggs and going broody, and not growing the sickle-shaped tail feathers.
