Now don't go jumpin' on me, but I started ( and mind you this was a long time ago, ) making it really sweet. Gradually I reduced the sugar to a comfortable level. I send my kids yogurt (b/c I don;t have kefir grains anymore) to school with just a bit of jam mixed in.

for breakfasts sometimes, we make smoothies with frozen blueberries, raspberries and bananas, with a cup of yogurt. The bananas are used mainly for sweetening, although the flavour is nice too. Peaches and pineapple are good for sweetening naturally also.

My kids love smoothies, but they have to have blueberries in them or they will pass. find out what your kids like. If they are not big on fruit, try chocolate peanut butter or chocolate mint-wit cocoa powder and extract, (and sugar)..Experiment.
Believe it or not, I agree with you! If the kids are used to sugar, wean them off gradually. Sugar up some GOOD yogurt, then over the next weeks, gradually reduce it and maybe add honey or maple syrup (the real stuff, of course!). If they are older, get them involved in experimenting. Go visit a maple syrup operation or a bee display at a museum, and borrow some videos from the library on both. Make it cool and interesting and appealing.

OK, here's a question for you food experts.

I have a teen age son who just can't seem to put on weight. He is a basketball player and burns off about everything he eats.

We've had him on whey protein when was lifting weights and that didn't seem to make a difference.

Man....I wish I had that motabolism.
What he needs is a big ol' cheeseburger or two or three, not protein shakes. Chicken with the skin on it. I don't like protein shakes at all. Fresh whey is very healthy for you, dried whey is not recognized by the body as food, but rather as a toxin. Watch out for soy, it really messes with boys and men in the family jewels department.

He may need more good fats, like raw whole milk and whole milk cheese, meats that aren't lean, plenty of butter on plenty of veggies, and lots of good carbs (unprocessed foods that have no label....meaning high-carb veggies like baked potatoes with butter and whole, real sour cream.) Nothing labeled low-fat or lite. NO SOY! Did I mention soy??? Corn on the cob with butter. All the things we ladies who are watching our butts expand just reading this need to avoid.

OK, now I'm hungry again..... :drool

I need to get my whole family eating yogurt (not the pre-sweetened stuff) and kefir.

Last night my 7 yr old had a tummy ache as usual, so having being frustrated I made her drink a little bit (really little) of kombucha and made her drink a couple oz of kefir. I blended up a couple strawberries and added them to it for sweetness. She went to bed right after that so I really don't know if they helped.

Am I better off to just let them eat the little commercial cups? I mean is that better than nothing? Or do you all have some tricks on getting it into them?

Yocheese was a slight success, gotta work on some more flavor variations.
I make yogurt parfaits for my 8-yr. old son. I try to make them look similar to the stuff you can get at McDonald's: Layers of yogurt & berries, with some toasted oatmeal on top.

I give my kids Lifeway kefir. It comes in various flavors.I like the plain, but they tend to like strawberry or blueberry.Greek yogurt is good too.I like making my own yogurt at home with a gallon or milk and a bit of the store bouht stuff to get things going.
