My friend who is going on an SS journey with me (me more then her, but we both got chickens!) went to the Dr. yesterday and got some depressing news. She is hypothyroid and has HIGH cholesterol, basically *he* said she is a ticking time bomb. She now has to be GF and vegan, GF is healthy but not vegan!!

I am a gemini, lol never listen to a gemini because we get crazy about stuff so I need articles and stuff to help her see that her Dr. is wrong and that she can control all this through a healthier diet, etc. I am going to do a quick search of the forum while my eggs boil, but then I have to run off to the barn and exercise the animals.

I found this all out when I told her I dropped our favorite precious yogurt flavor/brand, and she said she coudnt have it anymore. Now maybe this is a big excuse for me to get off my tush and us make yogurt/kefir together? Ah :( I have hated Drs since they almost killed my grandfather a few years back. He was on deaths door, but God sent him to the health food store last minute where they diagnosed him and put him back on track with his health. (He had been on so many antibiotics for so many years his good flora was gone, I learned this in a round about way in biology class a few months later!! Ugh.)

I do not know a lot about this subject but I wanted to mention I have been taking Braggs Apple cider vinegar for a few months now with great results. Not only have I lost weight but my joints feel better. I have read a lot on the positives of using an organic ACV and lowering cholesterol is supposed to be one of the benefits. I take it with honey and have come to really like it. I can TOTALLY tell when I don't take it. Just thought I would throw that out there.

iodine supplementation is the answer for hypothyroid. Take a look at the testimonials on this page.

I have been supplementing with iodine now for over 4 years and I would not be without it.

You can get lots of help with iodine supplementation at this forum www.natmedtalk.com do a forum search on iodine there.

Cholesterol issues are pretty easy to fix. A change in diet is generally required. Policosanol will reduce cholesterol and is more effective that pravacol or zocor, two common meds prescribed for it and lots safer.

Your friend should not let this doctor freak her out. They are very fear motivated since they really have no true answers and cannot heal her because they don't know a dam thing about how the body works. It they did they would know that iodine is necessary to make thyroxine, the thyroid hormone. They would also know that 98 percent of americans are deficint and this deficiency disease becomes pronouced during middle ages..They have absolutley no account for why there is a hypothryoid epidemic in this nation... I tell you. Iodine is the answer. It is simply a nutritional issue.

I have done a lot of research on this over the past 3 years. Basically, the main thing doctors blame high cholesterol on (saturated fat, meat and foods containing cholesterol) DO NOT cause high cholesterol in the body.

A diet high in FRUCTOSE and CARBOHYDRATES will cause your body to have a lot of fat in the blood. So going vegan is THE WORST POSSIBLE THING IN THE WORLD you can do if you do have high cholesterol.

Also, unless she got the cholesterol test that specifically tests for particle size, she DOESN'T KNOW SQUAT about her true cholesterol issues. If she has a high LDL. but the particles are big and fluffy, she does not have an elevated heart disease risk. If her particles are small and dense, she is in trouble.

A low carbohydrate, high saturated fat diet makes your HDL (good cholesterol) go UP and it also raises your LDL BUT it makes the LDL fat and fluffy. A diet high in grains, sugars, starches and fruit can make your HDL and LDL go down but makes the LDL small, dense and deadly.

Here is some info for your friend...

http://www.healthcentral.com/cholesterol/c/7986/78640/high-fructose

If you can, list what she typically eats in a day.

Soy will destroy thyroid function. Soy is in almost EVERYTHING that is packaged and prepared....even breads!

mine is hyper. but low carb has it slowed down.

suddenly, i'm also no longer "allergic" to iodine/shell fish!!!

i loves low carb!!! i eat more carbs in the summer, oddly. lol. probably because my caloric intake plummets so badly i need SOMETHING.

*sighs*

it'll cool down in another month or so :) 6 more weeks of ick. then my wonderful lovely autumn!!!

anyhoo.... thyroids are really reactive to carbs. insulin = evil!!!

Why would 98% be deficient? Americans are infamous for iodized salt intake.

Skimming tonigh because it's hot and I'm tired. I'll just throw this in:
my cholesterol was high and I was bordering on hypothyroid when I went low carb. The change in eating habits changed both. Low carb, no processed foods, no soy, no restriction of fats (uncured bacon and full fat dairy whenever) brought everything into normal limits in two months with no meds.

My doctor told me that the aspartame will block iodine absorption. He said if I absolutely had to have a pop to make sure it wasn't diet.
