so looking at the GI, veggies are a great choice (duh)

my question is I like to eat an entire bag of frozen veggies. but when I add the serving to the number of carbs per serving, it comes out to 25 carbs per bag. that ends up being the same as eating a sandwich for lunch. so is eating a sandwich the same as eating a bunch of veggies?

The way I teach it is....don't count carbs on LGI veggies. Don't eat high GI veggies if you want to lose weight. So if they are low glycemic index veggies, don't even bother looking at the carb count.

It really takes me 12 classes to really, really teach this stuff.....hint-hint!

So what veggies are you eating? Skip peas and corn. Think of those as seeds, aka a carb serving, not a veggie serving. Stick with leafy greens, green beans, carrots, brocolli, etc. I'm trying to think of what comes in a bag, frozen....

Make sense?

Carbwise? Yes. Healthwise? No. You have macronutrients (fat, carbs, protein) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). The veggies are going to give you more micronutrients.

The veggies are also going to have less of an effect on your blood sugar and insulin levels than the bread. Eating a whole bag of veggies is going to make you full and satisfied. Eating bread will spike your blood sugar, spike your insulin levels, and possibly put you in to a hypoglycemic crash making you hungrier and eat even more.

I'm trying to think of what comes in a bag, frozen....
I buy those broccoli, cauliflower carrot mixes. Yummmmm.

Then slather it with butter and shredded sharp cheddar and you will lower the glycemic index some more..... :drool

I know Free, but I'm sorry, I just can't afford it right now. Our goal is to become debt free and includes no extras for a couple years. I'd love to attend, but not in the cards right now. :hit

well, this bag I'm eating consists of broccoli, red peppers, green beans, water chestnuts and mushrooms. My new fav thing to do is cook an entire bag just to a boil, then drain and add butter and parm. cheese.

I just ordered the south beach diet book. (paperswap.com, love that site!)

Or just put the butter ON the cheese and skip the bread all together! :gig

(Cheddar is best for this :D)

Sorry to say I am not a South Beach fan. The entire diet plan is based on the idea that saturated fat is bad for you. Even the diet's founder had to recently admit he was wrong about that.

You're doing it right! I know you can't do the class this time, but who knows how many dozen lurkers will suddenly come out of the woodwork and say, "Did she say butter and cheese? And no counting all those numbers??? Sign me up!!!"

I went to the doctor Friday and asked her about the whole diet thing. I told her I had some girlfriends (ya'll! :D ) that were telling me to stick with protein, fats and veggies. but WW said low fat/low cal and I'm so confused I just want to say screw it and eat a cheeseburger. She laughed and said don't do that. Listen to your girlfriends and check out the south beach diet. eat your veggies in carbs, but try to keep your carbs at around 30-40 a day. and she guarantees I'll lose weight. I told her when I tried that before I actually gained weight. she said I wasn't doing some thing right, get the book.

so, here I am......

I figured I'd just take Frees suggestions (real butter and cheese) and use that instead of the lowfat stuff. I thought maybe if I modified it to include real food, it might work.....

Thanks to ya'll, my hubby's favorite snack is fried cheddar in coconut oil!
