SB book isn't ALL bad, you just have to realize the fat bias is in it. Cutting your fat like they recommend often results in falling off the wagon and binging. If you don't cut your fat to really lo levels, there is some stuff in there that can help...like avoiding processed foods and sugar.

Better books are
Natural Health and Weight Loss by Barry Groves or
Protein Power Life Plan by Drs. Mike & Mary Eades

I keep it even simpler. For weight loss, the average woman (average...everyone is different, but this is a good place to start) can tolerate only 2 servings of carbs per day. That is 1/2 cup of lentils, beans, yam, sweet potato, peas or corn....avoid the last two for weight loss. A slice of bread is a serving, ALL whole wheat only, and have a serving of grain carbs rarely (including brown rice), like a half cup of ww pasta (try spaghetti squash). Popcorn is VERY high on the glycemic index....if you MUST have some or you might become homicidal....slather it with butter and eat LESS.

No sugar or substitutes except stevia, and no white flour or any processed foods.

ok, 2 servings of carbs, but I just ate 6 servings, all veggies but 6 servings. so you mean 2 servings of non-veggie LGI carbs?

(please don't smack yourself in the head by my ignorance)

My doctor did say "they" (the medical establishment) are now saying that our bodies aren't designed to eat grains, or at least as many as the food pyramid says to. she said the pyramid has changed, but still not right.

Yes, I try to simplify it by making all LGI veggies free foods...no counting anything except to get enough of them! Trust me, you can't possibly eat too many....so just count the grains and legumes and high GI veggies like potatoes, peas, and corn as a carb serving...usually half a cup. Avoid the last three for weight loss, just maybe an occasional treat, and slather with butter.

I'm hoping to get to that point one day but for now, I have to be aware of everything I eat.

Yep, that is a key factor to longterm success, too, being hyper-aware until it becomes habit, and you are so in tune with your body that you know exactly what you can tolerate. It really is freeing, ultimately. It takes 1-3 years on average to get to that point, depending on a person's diligence and baseline health condition. And how much chaos is in their life at the time.
