At first I couldn't understand how you only had a 3 month growing season in California, but I guess you must live pretty high up in northern California. Have you tried to extend your growing season with hoop houses and the like?

Yep, we are up at 5,000 ft in the Sierra Nevadas. I haven't tried hoop houses because 1. I'm lazy and I have not gotten around to making/buying one. 2. I'm kind of afraid the snow will kill it.

BUT, I'm feeling more determined this year and with all my wonderful chicken compost, rising prices in the store, and more time (kids are bigger and not such a handful anymore) I want to have a fabulous garden.

Just make sure you build it sturdy and knock the snow down regularly. If you haven't already heard about it, Elliott Coleman wrote a great book about gardening year round with hoop houses, etc. I would recommend it.
