I've been lurking for a little while and really like the info and tone of this place so thought I'd jump in to the fray! I'm new to the idea of self sufficiency as a concept, but have been working slowly towards it my whole life - if that makes any sense at all :)

I've always liked working on my own vehicles and building and repairing my own stuff, I'm self-employed, the idea of debt just seems crazy so I'm basically cash only. The new thing for me is thinking about food self sufficiency. Last month my family got a half dozen chickens for the back yard and I'm experimenting with aquaponics. Looking forward to learning lots from this wonderful site.

Hi, Tom, and :welcome

The concept of it being a gradual process.....or a lightbulb moment....is not new to anyone here! We are all on our own journeys and all have various goals, so we look forward to your input into our discussions!

Hello and welcome!

I have been doing some ponics experiments too. Mine involved ducks for a while, but a hawk took care of that :p Now they are in an enclosed pen so I am trying to figure out what fish would do well in my little pond. I look forward to hearing about your experiments.

ah yes... it always STARTS with just a few chickens. dont worry, Tom, pretty soon you'll be with us and start your conversations like this:

"hi i'm Tom and i'm a chicken junkie. i now have 100 chickens........."

and then.. might as well get a few ducks, and a few turkeys, then a hog or two.. pretty soon you'll be laughing at the days when you had to buy your own food.

welcome to our merry band!
