Last year I was given a gift card to Williams & Sonoma. I still have it, so we went there yesterday to see if there was anything that I wanted.

I don't go for gadget-y crap that just takes up space, I also am not easily impressed with pre-made mixes that I can easily make myself, or catchy little waste of you money things....like a jar of little bundles of Bouquet Garni for $18....had I known some sucker would be willing to pay that, I'd be rich!

I was however, slightly tweaked by the Himalayan Pink Sea Salt. It was in nice chunks and came with a little grater (which screams....SUCKER) but I just wanted to see if anyone knows anything about it and if it would be worth the $13.

I was wondering about that salt myself, after seeing it recently in HomeGoods for about $6 per pound. Salt lamps are popular among the earthy-crunchy set, too. Seems gimmicky to me, but I don't know for sure.

If I had that gc in my hot little hand, I would take the opportunity to get a really nice stainless steel kitchen tool that would last me a lifetime. You didn't say how much the certificate was for, but the online store had tons of really nice things like peelers with nice fat handles, all kinds of spoons and skimmers and tongs, really nice splatter guards (on my wish list), etc. You don't need to get a gadget you will never use....get a tool that you will use a lot in your new lifestyle that requires lots of veggie prep! The right tools make the job faster and easier. JMO, and just some ideas. I would be very hesitant to pay their prices, but with a gc, you betcha!

The only thing I was really considering were some little leave dies....you press them into pie dough and decorate the crust. Very cute little detail, but my clan are not huge pies people. But they would last me a life time and I always entertain on Thanksgiving.

I did find out that there is a grain mill that attaches to my kitchenaid. I am goign to go on line and check that out.

My GC is only $40 so it is not gonna buy much!

Well, they probably can't mark the grain mill up TOO much, that sounds like it would be a good buy! I use the meat grinder for my KitchenAid a lot. I have little leaf cutters I got somewhere, but I don't think I ever used them.....They are cute, though.

I don't know what makes the Himalayan salt so good but there is a company in Utah, and probably more in the U.S., that sells sea salt.

Here is the url for the Utah company. It looks like it would be cheaper than the stuff you mentioned and you don't need a gadget.

I ended up with one last year too. I got a mother of pearl caviar spoon. It doesn't take up much space. I found I was feeling the same as you about what they carried. I think Free has a great point. If you can, find something of quality that will last forever.

Redmond Real Salt is what I use for most of my cooking and for the table. I get it at Whole Foods....but the site (thanks, Dac!) has free shipping right now on $30, and there is a 10 lb bucket (a bucket to use later!!!! :weee ) that seems like a great deal. I'm not out, but since I use that salt a lot, I may just have to grab a bucket!

The cheapest places I have seen the Himalayan pink salt is tjmaxx or marshalls its around 6.00. I do not know what makes it special but I brought back grey sea (Sel gris) salt from Normandy and I do not know what it is but I love the flavor it has, so I am assuming it is the high mineral elements & iron?? I am no expert :D
I always save those gift certificates for something I would never pay full price after the holiday season. They have some really good buys come Jan or Feb.
