Hubs called today on his way to work. The tranny is gone in the Jetta, he couldn't get it into fifth gear. I don't know all the details yet, but it looks like we are either getting a new car for Christmas, or a new transmission. good times.

Having the same problem in my subaru. My situation, we are going with buying a new/used transmission. In our case it will cost much less. Plus I like my old car very much. :)

Yeah, we will probably do the same thing, as a "new car" is not in the budget. but hubby is and has been very busy at work lately, time is a factor. heaven forbid we have to pay someone to fix it for us, although, that is what will probably happen.

I have a 1993 jeep Cherokee that I just got and the trans is slipping, I am going to try to rebuild it. Rebuild kit is about $200. I can't see paying a shop $1800 to do it, besides I always wanted to rebuild one :)

Beerman.......if that Jeep happens to have the Chrysler trans in it, pm me if you have any questions. I have done HUNDREDS of those......

As far as the Jetta goes? As long as the car isn't rusty, stick a used transmission in it and keep driving it. Depending on the cars mileage, you might want them to stick a new clutch kit in it while the transmission is out of the car. Make sure whoever does the transmission, has the flywheel machined if you do the clutch.

When the transmission in my minivan went, we couldn't afford either and sold the van as is... I regret it to this day!
DH has a Jetta and I know what he would do. He'd replace that transmission. He loves that car!

Well, this is how it seems to be playing out. Hubby knows a guy who will fix it for a reasonable price. he has actually worked on the jetta before.

The jetta is in awesome shape body-wise and everything else. there is not ONE spec of rust on it. It has 270 000 km (IDK what that is in mileage).

Anyhoo, diesel jetta guy (a guy we know who only works on volkswagon an saabs)has a transmission he can put in the car. Hubs will keep our transmission and rebuild it and then sell it back to mechanic dude.

OR, .... Hubby knows another guy who has a jetta, (older than the one we have now, but still running well) and he is selling it for 1300$. We could pick that up while hubby rebuilds the tranny we have now, so hubby can take his time to rebuild, and then when ds is old enough, we will have another jetta diesel for him to drive.

And we have also discussed setting up a savings envelope (since we hate banks) for a new car, should the need arise. don't know if I was paranoid, but the pickup was making weird noises today too when I drove it.

Your situation sounds a bit like ours. I'm driving a '94 Volvo wagon with 250K miles on it. DH drives the diesel Jetta. It's 2003 with about 75K on it. It's in great shape. But his '86 Ford 250 truck is rusting out on itself. He's got another truck that he's piecing together bit by bit but it's not there yet. We're concerned about the Volvo, don't want to put money into it, so we're squirreling away every spare bit of cash to buy something newer in the spring. I'd love to find a diesel Jetta wagon.
