My cousin and his lady friend stopped over this evening and the conversation turned to children and birthin' and breast feedin' and all that kinda stuff. She told us about her home made baby wipes that she used to make when her kids were small and she was broke. She'd take a roll of paper towels and cut the roll in half, so she ended up with two short rolls of towels. Next, she put one teaspoon of baby oil, one teaspoon of baby soap and one cup of warm water in a container large enough to set one of the half rolls of paper towels in, and let it soak up the 1/2 mixture, turn the roll over and let it soak up the other half. She would then just roll off what she needed as she needed them. If she had to travel, she'd just take few of the home made wipes with her in a zip lock bag and toss them in her diaper bag!! I thought this was VERY ingenious and very frugal and told her I was stealing her idea to post it on here for you folks!! Here ya go!!

Very neat! I made my own by cutting a receiving blanket into 12 squares and then sergered the edges and they work great!! I just get them wet with warm water when we need them.

Oooh---I loved those wipes! I made them for my babies. This is one time you really DO want to splurge on heavy-duty paper towels. The recycled or cheap ones just fall apart.

Pam's Pride--If I get a chance to do it again, I think I would like to try that method instead, at least for the pee diapers if not the soiled ones.

They work great for the soiled ones too. My DH actually loves them too!!

(As a side note: I made the same thing for my own homemade 'tp' for number one and my mom made fun of me but now she is actually thinking of making some and using them!! LOL!! I am slowly bringing her over to the dark side....I mean the SS side!! LOL!!)

That's why I love this site--no matter how far I get on the spectrum, there's someone out there (like you ;)) who's even further "out there." Good for you--I'll have to percolate that idea for a bit.

ETA--This teasing is meant very kindly, of course!

I just got a 1/2 gallon container with a snap top lid from Target to set next to the potty to put the wipes in. When it gets full I just dump them into the wash.

I tried using washable flannel squares, but even when we were doing cloth-diaper loads anyhow I quickly got to using paper towels for the pooier jobs and it was sort of gradual creep from there to using only paper towels. (Bad Pat :p)

All I ever did was dampen the paper towels with water, though. We keep a little squirt bottle, like the kind you would mist plants with, next to the select-a-size paper towel roll at the change table, and just dampen the paper towels as we need them. I did oil baby bottoms with olive oil as needed for the first few months but since then haven't seen any need for anything beyond plain water. Probably some other kids' bums are different though :)

My vet recommended baby wipes for quick cleaning my dog. Sure beats the full bath. I will experiment with this, SKR8PN. Thanks for posting the idea.
