Just wondering what everyone did to mark dates on their containers after milking. We're trying to get a better system down than, "uhhhh, I think maybe this one is older?? we should probably use it I guess??" :th

I don't know that I really want to put a bunch of the little sticker labels on them. Seems like it might get messy?? Does anyone do that and find that it works? Because its the only idea I can seem to come up with right now.

If you are using metal lids, then a sharpie works well. You can wipe off the previous date with rubbing alcohol.

Wanted to add, I have learned to never use tape. Never can remember to take it off, and it becomes a part of the lid or jar when I run it through the dishwasher :(

Thank you!!! I didn't even think about a sharpie coming off with rubbing alcohol! And I was worried about the tape for the exact same reason!

I have a small basket nearby with small pieces of paper in it, or old business cards, or cut up paper that was printed on one side....and a bag of rubber bands in a drawer near my kitchen sink, where I filter and bottle my milk. I put the day and the date on a square and rubber band it to the bottle. Afterwards, the rubber band goes back in the drawer and the bit of paper goes into the trash. Easy-peasy and also easy to read when looking through a crowd of bottles in the fridge.

i know this is a bit of an old topic but i thought i'd throw my system into the mix :)
i put my milk into quart mason jars. the jar to use is the one in front on the far left, top shelf. after i strain that days milk the jar goes in behind the last jar. as the jars build up they go along the left side of the fridge and along the very back. then as you empty a jar they all slide forward and you use the new front jar.

also when i took food processing class in high school they had sticker labels that washed off when you washed the pan/etc. they would be handy but i have never seen any for sale anywhere.

I am using low tack tape and a sharpie. I label the date and am or pm.The crew has been instructed to take the oldest first. I am using pickle jars that I have saved, and I use them b/c I can get my hands inside to wash them well.I have found that even if you mark it with a sharpie on th lid, it will wipe off with just your wet finger, so I like the tape better. Rubber bands don't last long around here,-my kids think the only reason they exist is for shooting at each other .
