i know this is a bit of an old topic but i thought i'd throw my system into the mix :)
i put my milk into quart mason jars. the jar to use is the one in front on the far left, top shelf. after i strain that days milk the jar goes in behind the last jar. as the jars build up they go along the left side of the fridge and along the very back. then as you empty a jar they all slide forward and you use the new front jar.
I am pretty much using this method too. I just have one shelf in the fridge and one in the freezer devoted to goat milk now and I place and remove them in those spots in a particular order. Since I don't have a ton of room, by the time it is full I better make cheese, it cannot possibly get too old because I don't have enough space.

I've been having the same sort of problem with my egg containers. I have a bunch of egg cartons donated by my friends who eat eggs and know that I have chickens. I've been trying to figure out a way to know which container has the oldest eggs so I eat them first.

Your suggestions of a sharpie won't work on the egg paper cartons but it occurs to me that a color coded sticker would work.
I could put the date on the sticker and since color stands out well, I could find it faster.

For eggs, I do what OGG does, I rotate in a specific order.

OK so you girls are organized and can do that. I am "organization" challenged. I even go to a 12 step program for the "organizationally challenged"...It doesn't help much though... :gig

You can also use an oil pencil or grease pencil, used for writing on glass or metal. Washes right off w/ soap and doesn't wipe off too easily.
