With all of Bee's Off Grid talk and me being completely fed up with our So Cal life.....how on earth does one venture into off grid and earn a living?

I would love to just go rural, but again, don't know how we would make a living. It seems to me that you have to be independently wealthy. I know that our expenses would radically drop if we made a move, but our income is dependent on Hubby working......which seems to be city related :/

Someone tell me how to break this cycle.... earning to living and living to earn :hit

I'm not completely off grid, nor am I independantly wealthy.

We're suriving. That's it. Our extra "expenses" are things like buying piggies, buying calves, etc...but those things will feed us later.

Wanna come out and "try it" for a week?

Come to Camp Aly.

Yeah, IF I could afford camp Aly, I'd be there in a heart beat....I need a break form the financial stress.
I good long hard day of physical labor and a good nights sleep is probably what I need.

NOT Southern, Ca. :)
I often ponder this question all the time. My dh is an avid wood worker and in our former life he bought most the tools and supplies anyone would ever need. so I would definitely put him to work making something. But we couldn't be off grid for this. Power tools need power.

I think we have discussed before it would be a good idea to have several little incomes at one time. That way if something failed, or was not selling well you would have other things to rely on.

I am thinking in my case I would use the Internet as much as possible. It can be an amazing tool.

Other than that winning the lottery could help!! :p

ps, I want to come to camp Aly.

Winning the lottery would be ideal :)

My mother (although not living off grid) makes a living at home by having mini-office in her house... she is an off-site phone answering service for a few companies, she also maintains websites for things like apartment rentals, sports teams, etc... that need weekly updates... she has several and just charges a minimum weekly fee to each for the updates.

You can live off grid and have a computer, satellite internet, phones, etc... so I'm guessing that is possible.

Ebay can be a great tool too, but they tend to fee people to death now.

Selling organic foods would be good (depending on health code regulations)... there are websites that sell organic baby food frozen and shipped for up to $4.50/4oz... ingredients are usually just blended carrots or peas, etc... making $18/pound of carrots would be great :)

I would definitely use the internet as much as possible... although I don't think that I'll ever live completely off-grid... just farther off than I am now... lol

I dunno! I haven't figured it out yet! LOL

But, jeeze, if ya'll are serious....I'm gonna need a pig pen hillbillied up so....

But it won't be like going to band camp...more like camp uh...sheeoot what's that movie where they go to camp and the camp next door has all the cool new gadgets and the lake and skiiing etc..etc....

Yea, well, we'd be the camp that doesn't have the cool gadgets and stuff.

Off grid normally means off the electric grid. Do you mean something else?

Unless you are self employed at home you can make a living while your home is off grid like you do anywhere else.

Word of mouth, and lots of close and diverse friendships would go a long way towards living closer to the land. With today's modern conveniences, I don't think you could ever go completely off the grid AND still have an income. If nothing else, just having access to the internet could provide an income.
