Pioneergirl, tell us more about your plans? Are you going off-grid or just back to the land to homestead or both? It would be really neat to have you do a pictoral and journal on your progress!

Ours is called Canada pension plan. do you guys get statements from the govt. saying if you continue to contribute this much, you should be getting this much? So reasssuring
Yep. DH just got his a couple weeks ago. It lists your earnings for your entire year, each year of your life. It gives multiple estimates on how much you can draw if you retire at 62, 65, 67 and so on. I think it even lists what your dependents would draw if you were to die or become disabled.

I want to write back and ask, "You promise?"

To live on $6500 per year you have to own almost nothing. You seriously can not have alot on that amt. of money. Now, sure it can be done IF YOU want that. For me my retirement land is 30 acres. My taxes without house are well over $1000 already. When I retire and build a home, who knows.

I read that Social Security is secure up to at least 2037. Guaranteed, nope..LOL..just read it though.

It all comes down to what you are willing to live with in this lifetime.

But for me at some point I can not see having nothing will work well when older. How many older couples do you see struggling terribly now cause they had nothing (but tried to work hard to get something) and still have a terrible rough time. Imagine someone who strives to have nothing--they sure won't have anything to help them when older.
But again, if that is what they want then sure.

I still wonder about those who tackle this situation. I always think about the financials we don't see. The way they live we don't see. But for everyone the way they handle their money is their own way thru life and if they want big changes like this then go for it.

Beekissed, yes, I plan on journaling here and writing one as well. The want is to find good ground, and homestead off the grid. I want to be as SS as possible in this day and age. I have plans of x number of acres for planting for myself, x number for grazing, rotating of course, a cow, pig or 2, goats, sheep, chickens, and even a horse :D

I journaled about it today, the plot we 'think' we found. I plan on journaling ALL of my trials, sucesses, and failures. Everything. No fluff, no cover ups.

I know there will be some things I can't replace, but I can use solar, wind, and hydro to its fullest. I can grow, can, butcher, etc. You get the idea. I don't want to hijack this thread! hehe

No hijacking necessary....I started this thread so that folks could read an encouraging article about downsizing, going off grid and innovative ways to make extra money besides punching a time clock.

I love that you are moving in that direction! In all these when the SHTF scenarios that folks discuss, you will actually be living everyone's back up plan. You, hopefully, will not miss a step if a local or national disaster should happen and this should be an educational journey for us all when you journal about it.

:thumbsup

Just curious Pioneergirl, does your $20/day begin when you start on your homestead or is that the number you'll need to maintain once you have all of your SS projects complete? That sounds very realistic and doable! Will either of you be working or do you have a "magic bread plan" of your own?

Just planning for the future and gathering ideas! :pop

The $20 a day is what will, at the end of the month, be the monthly payment on the land. It sounds very doable when its broke down into a more reasonable amount! :) Its a lot easier to swallow than $600 in one lump sum, at least, to me it does hehe.

As for the monthly $$ needed once I get it all said and done? DH is looking at any job that will pay the monthly payment, and I'm working on plans for a market garden. Of course, this is all still in the planning stages. We are gathering things now, tools, etc as we find them at flea markets and yard sales. With our job having us travel all over, we have great opportunities. I figure, get it now, so I don't have to buy it all later! If I've got a job that will allow me to buy these things as I find them, over time, then why not? That way, when I find that perfect piece, I'll have what I need to get to work. Thats the plan, anyway! :D
