How we went from $42,000 to $6,500 and lived to tell about it!

As I said in my previous post, it wasn't her criticism of the article that I was referring to....anyone can criticize anything on here all they want. But the aggressive tone of the criticism, plus other aggressive responses to earlier posts of mine leads me to believe that her tone is towards me and not necessarily towards the thread material. I could be wrong but I sense a pattern.

We all have problems in our lives at different times. It happens. Sometimes it comes out in our posts but I clearly seem to be a trigger point for Hiker for some reason.

She can critique anything she dang well pleases for all I care and she can call authors of articles "hucksters" all she wants.
I'm sorry she is losing her home and her animals. I'm also sorry that she seems to like to use a curt and aggressive tone towards my posts~subject matter aside.

I wasn't attacking her at all, merely mentioning this vibe I am getting from her in her response to my posts. I apologize for calling her "grumpy and angry" but that's how I see it. Whenever someone apparently has a bad attitude towards me I generally refer to it as a chip on their shoulder.

I'm sorry you perceived that as an attack. It was offered as friendly advice with a smile and an encouraging tone, but you can see it any way you wish. Again, that is purely a personal choice to read negativity into my every post.
This is just sad.

You know the old saying, if you have nothing good to say about a person, then don't say it at all.

Apply it here OK!

Hikerchick has every right to criticize an article or post her feelings about what is posted on this board.

Don't feel you have the right to police people's feelings about issues on the board. It is everyone's right to post their own opinions and I never saw it as a negative attitude toward you, just the subject matter we chat about.

you say you offer friendly advice with a smile and an enouraging tone, well, many a dog wags its tail before it rips your throat out.

And----pfftt....:barnie --whatever. I don't want to carry this too far obviously. But :duc, :p

Sorry, but there simply IS negativity in calling someone grumpy and angry and suggesting they remove the chip from their shoulder. I see nothing friendly and encouraging about it, even if you put a smiley and thumbs up after the advice.

Anyway, this article sounds interesting. And life is always interesting when we come at it from different viewpoints and perspectives.

ETA: Just a thought---maybe the PM feature is a good place to deal with feelings of persecution or other misunderstandings. That way the thread can continue its arguments about the topic at hand, while the personal stuff can stay just that: personal.

Good Morning!! :D :hide

Here is what I got out of this article....even if I make more than $6500 per year, I can still live ON $6500 per year and bank the rest. That really appeals to me, putting money away and not spending it on what I consider wastful. The article helps me put things into perspective.

So everyone got something different out of the article, I for one found it very interesting and encouraging.

hey BBH!

So everyone got something different out of the article, I for one found it very interesting and encouraging.
thanks for saying this and yes i think everyone got something different out of it. (can i hide under the chair with you??)

some of the discussions got me thinking and here's one thing i was thinking about last nite:

whats the difference between being happy with and being satisfied with your life?

have you seen this site? the happiness project?
http://www.happiness-project.com/

i've been looking it over and its adding to my perspective. i think there is a myth that the same things make different people happy. and some people are happy by NOT being happy. hum....

like Bee said, its interesting to see what makes folks tick.

obviously their life isnt the first choice for most people, but it shows what is possible.

well, my point is that is does not necessarily show what is possible. Anyone can write anything. That doesn't make it true. That was all I was saying.

"I can still live ON $6500 per year and bank the rest."

YES YES YES!

Although I admire the can-do spirit of the couple in the article, what caused me concern is that they put a mere $1000 away for medical emergencies, and there was no mention of saving for the future or old-age planning. There are too many "what ifs" that they seemed to gloss over with little or no forethought. If they both make it to a sturdy old age, are they still going to be baking bread and growing a large garden? Living day to day is wonderful when you're strong and healthy, but what if the day comes when one of them is injured or seriously ill? Are they counting on one or more of those six kids to come to their rescue? That is NOT what I consider to be the Sufficient Self lifestyle.
