I accidentally posted a reply for another thread in this thread. I am clearly losing my mind.

$7 an hour won't even pay rent. I make 5 times that and I struggle. I don't know how people do that unless they live with someone else.
you make 5 times $7 an hour? that's $35 an hour? and you struggle? sorry, but it sounds like you just need to learn where to cut back. I'm sorry, but if you can't make it on $35 an hour, you need to take a course on budgetting.
You have no idea what my expenses are. It's not good to judge people.
Correct, I don't know what your expenses are. And if you knew me, you'd know I don't judge people. I'm saying if you're having a hard time on $35 you need to learn how to budget. Even someone making a million an hour will go bankrupt if they over spend.
I'm not judging you, but I am having a hard time feeling sorry for you when most people make less than half and are just fine.
If you can't take suggestions, than maybe you shouldn't put out there that you make more than probably most, but still stuggle.

I am not allowed to confess that I struggle? I work two other jobs in addition to the one that pays my regular salary. My mortgage is huge. I have student loans to repay. I am paying a loan on a 2001 car with 170,000 miles on it. My daughter was hospitalized numerous times.

How low must a person's earnings be before they are allowed to say they struggle? I didn't realize there were rules about that. I will keep my problems to myself if they offend you.

It really does depend on medical circumstances, cost of living for your area and many, many other factors.

If I got a raise to your level of pay, while still living in MS, and I kept my current living standard the same, I'd be :weee

I hope you find your mind! I hate it when I do that. It's a terrible thing to misplace. ;)

Anyways, back to wally world, shall we :D

My local grocer buys meats in different cuts, sometimes very slightly, so that wally won't price match them. That same grocery is where my mom got 25lbs of bananas for $1, yes that's one, single dollar bill plus tax.

That's a lot of banana bread.

Great points, ladies. Cost of living and life circumstances are hugely important in how we do on the money we make. My DH and I have low wages, but we also have been very, very lucky so far.

As for WM employees, it's appalling in my view that they, fully employed, need to be such a drain on social programs in order that Wal-Mart, the corporation, can be so stinkin' wealthy. How can the owners hold their heads up in public?

My conservative, Republican parents do pretty well. When their business is doing awesome, their employees get BIG bonuses! Their secretary already earns more than I do after a college education. They just now started having the employees chip in a little for their health insurance. Until a few years ago, they paid 100%. When times get tough, the bonuses get cut down, but the wages are still great, benefits still great.

I guess I make the point because it CAN work for companies to treat their employees very, very well and still do well themselves. My guess is that you would have incredibly loyal employees.

But, as keeps coming up in different forms, if we want cheap things (food, WM goods, gas), we have to acknowledge that the price is being paid elsewhere. As WZ says, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

nope, no rules at all about stuggle. I'm suggesting that you need to learn to budget. I get having bills, I get over spending, you I GET having a daughter wil medical problems. (you have no idea how much I get that) but we had to learn to budget or we would've had to file for Chap 13. If you're moving than the mortgage won't be a burden anymore, so that will give you the cashflow to reevaluate your finances and set up a budget.
Your problems don't offend me in the least. I do get offended when someone complains about "new shoes to those that have no feet".

edited 'cause I'm the typo Queen

Okie I understand where you are coming from definitely but $35 an hour is not that great in many areas. Location is a big key in finances.

And someone making that money and living a normal decent life and BOOM the axe falls (as it does on anyone from time to time) then that money is still not enough.

Budget is needed for everyone to live within their means....but the actual dollar per hr. doesn't mean you can survive easily at all.

There are such decent people on this forum!

Bringing it back to Wal-Mart, this previous conversation does bring up an interesting question. Do ALL WM employees earn the same, regardless of where they live?

I've seen cost-of-living charts for America, and wow! It really, really makes a difference where you live, what your food costs, what land prices are, what houses are going for. All of it. Even whether you have public transportation or must depend on a car, car insurance, gas.

So, I wonder if all WM employees are basically at the same wage level, regardless of where their store is...
