I wonder if this varies by breed? I have a mixed flock and the birds seemed more like their relatives than the other chickens. My EEs all layed small eggs for about a month and then layed normal eggs.....my Buff Orpingtons all layed weird eggs for awhile, then started laying double yolkers and then settled down to normal eggs, and my RIRs all seemed to go from laying a f@rt egg to laying GIANT eggs.....and my Russian Orloffs started laying last and layed real small eggs at first and took a long time to come up to size.
I have speckled sussex pullets now too so we'll see how they do.
I found having different purebred chickens helps me identify easily who laid what, when I had more of the same breed I was never certain what was going on, so more of my chicken-and-egg questions were answered when I went to having a couple of each type. This year I have more EEs than anything so I'll just be confused about whose green eggs those are...........
