I don't know that the place I'd like to live actually exists. I'd like to live on a very large island-my own. There would have to be a beach as well as mountains. Climate wise, I'd like it a bit cooler in the summer. Winters are fine. Lower humidity would be nice.

There would have to be a nice wooded area w/both evergreens (and not just pines!) as well trees that are good for firewood, have a lot of color in the fall, but not so dense that I can't ride there.

This is a tough one for me. I do know where I don't want to be...

I don't like the ocean, any of them. I've lived close by Lake Michigan for so long I'm spoiled. All the bennies of an ocean, without the hurricanes/tsunami's, beaches so clean the sand squeaks under your feet, and no scummy 'I need a shower' feeling after you take a swim. Oh, and no sharks! So that rules out tropical islands and coastal regions.

I don't like 'nekkid' mountains. I prefer mountains that are fully clothed, in hardwoods! I know, my family says I'm weird. Cross the Rockies off the list. :/

I don't like red dirt. Call me a freak, I don't care. Can't explain it, but red dirt bugs me. :p That eliminates quite a few states from my list of choices, actually.

I have trouble with excessive heat and excessive cold. My lungs are pretty scarred, and I just can't deal. So, no deep South, Far North, Equator countries.

Europe is too crowded. Love the architecture, not enough of a people person to want to live there.

So, I think my choice would be between the U.P. of Michigan (population about 2 people per square mile, gorgeous scenery, close to my beloved lake and Lake Superior) and anywhere between Knoxville TN and Asheville, NC (beautiful mountains, minimal tornado activity-petrified of those-, fantastic soil). I have lived in both areas, and personally lean towards TN/NC, but DH gripes "What is the point of owning 20 acres, if 1/2 acre of it is flat, and the rest is vertical?" which is true, I guess. I would still get my four seasons there(I'm a four seasons kinda gal), but much milder climate and longer growing season than we have here. The U.P. gets about 10-12 feet of snow in winter, and their growing season is VERY short(although the sun stays up until midnight at mid summer), but it's so beautiful, and sparsely populated. We did once look at a cabin outside Corbin KY though - it was fantastic (and, as I pointed out to hubster, only HALF of it was vertical!), but the people in the area were very, ummm..., how should I say this? Unwelcoming

Right back in Pendleton Co...has all the wow factor one could ever want. Every bend in the road brings another beautiful, awe-inspiring vista....I don't think I'd ever tire of seeing it.

Second choice? Caribbean, Hawaii, Fiji ....any island is fine, just drop me off.
Is that in VA? bee?

I lived where I want to go back to...the Caribbean...Cuba on the US side of the fence. I absolutely loved it there. Winter was 2 weeks long, and the lowest it got was 56F. We had no furnace in the house, nor glass windows for that matter. It was a dream for a midwestern gal.

2nd choice, Biloxi MS. I lived there 15 years, and hated to leave. But they moved casinos in, back in the 90's That atmosphere is just no place to raise children, and we had 3.

In WV, Moxie, but right on the border of VA and the land across the border is just as beautiful.

This is right over the mountain from me:

And this is right across the border..a little place called Blue Grass Valley...42 miles of beautiful farm land bordered by big mountain ridges.

And all the streams look like this except some are bigger with more rapids. When it rains or floods the water doesn't turn brown but kind of a sea green.

Beautiful country bee! My man is from West Virginia..Parkersburg. He moved here to SC in 95. He talks about taking me to visit WV someday...as I have never been there. All around it almost, just never to WV.

Interesting footnote...Pendleton County was named for Edmund Pendleton, a relative of my paternal grandmother. I thought it was one and the same.

It's a small world after all <singing badly off key> :D I am currently sitting about 20 mi. from P-burg as we speak...er...type. This is my home area, where I was raised and all. Now that I'm back here after living across the state in Pend. Co. it just looks so dull and dirty here compared to back there in God's country. Pendleton, Grant, Tucker, and maybe Greenbrier are the prettiest counties in WV...the rest of the counties are just land.

SSDreamin~ It is so peaceful there but the people are kinda strange...don't like outsiders and all. Nice but very insular. Pendleton Co. supposedly has the most millionaires per capita than any other county in WV. Yes, folks, there are millionaires in WV! :p

A few years ago they built a big golf course up there, cost over 10 mil or more, but then figured out that there were no hotels, no cell phone towers, no restaurants and not enough tourist attractions to support the golf course. Goes to show you that you don't have to be bright to be a millionaire.... :D

Lots of clean air, good roads, clean streams and wildlife there still....saw a black bear this past year that could look into my front truck window with all four feet on the ground. Thought there was a big Angus cow in the road!

That was what we ran into in KY - insular is an excellent word for it! Hubby loved it - he looks like a hermit, and would be very happy to live out his life as one too. I don't like feeling unwelcome. That area around you is beautiful though!

I thought it was odd that the county we live in now, way up in basically no-man's-land, has the most millionaire's per capita (or did, 4 years ago, before we moved- not that WE would change that statistic ;) )in our state. It was brought to my attention that, we have a very large Amish population, numerous Amish-owned businesses, and several huge industries within the county limits (Gerber baby food is made here - not sure any more, but used to be made ONLY here). Seems strange to me. Within one county, you can drive through a town - in the middle of nowhere really - that has every convenience of a big city - and buy a house on acreage for less than the cost of a new compact car!
