"We're saying to the people of Illinois, 'For eight years we've overspent, now we're going to make it your problem,'" said Rep. Roger Eddy. "We're making up for our mistakes on your back."

The increase means an Illinois resident who now owes $1,000 in state income taxes will pay $1,666 at the new rate. After four years, the rate drops to 4 percent and that same taxpayer will then owe $1,333.

Republicans predict the tax eventually will be made permanent.

"It's a cruel hoax to play on citizens to say this is temporary," said House Minority Leader Tom Cross, R-Oswego.

one thing we know...they WILL get money from the people one way or another. that is a fact. Ill. is the start...more states are going to "find the money" they require to function also. So we all best we ready for more troubles down the road in the financial dept! :(

If I remember correctly, IL, CA, & NY are all on the verge of bankruptcy. Folks in those states had better get ready to start paying much higher taxes for far fewer benefits. A lot of other states aren't far behind. :/

Texas has no state tax, but they tax everything else, LOL. Property tax, "sin" tax (tobacco, alcohol, entertainment, etc) fuel tax, sales tax, luxury item tax (luxury cars, boats) road and bridge tax, to name a few. We are tightening our belts too and lots of spending cuts will have to be made, dunno what the truly poor people who depend on medicaid and food stamps will do. Just glad we have a small garden in the front yard and a few chickens in the back.

I guess it is asking to much to require the states to live within their budgets. Me thinks it is time for another tax revolution.
