I was just wondering if severe trama, or repeated trama to the head could cause any bruising to the brain, which could in turn result in long term effects such as memory loss or a problem with the 'edit' button? And would a scan reveal anything such as damage? I'm asking for myself, as I have a girly Dr. appt next week, and was wondering if its a waste of time to ask for a referral.

I'm not a doctor, but I can offer a :hugs

Ask for the referral. Your brain is nothing to mess around with. It may or may not be revealed with a scan, but maybe your doc will order a neuro-psych exam and you can get some answers. And learn some techniques to function better on a daily basis.

Five years ago, I fell in a parking lot and was knocked unconscious when my head hit the running board of my car on the way down. It has only been since maybe spring of this year that I started to be able to think straight. (Some would argue that it still is an issue!) I couldn't remember many familiar things for many years.

I had a depressed skull fracture and a concussion, still have a dent in my head about 2" long. The concussion is what caused the memory problems. It's possible that instead of the memory returning, I have just trained my brain again.

I think a "bruised brain" would be an apt description of a concussion! I think, from my years working for a neurologist, that repetitive moderate closed head injuries can have a cumulative effect. I guess it depends on the severity of the trauma. What has been happening?

Lets just say my childhood wasn't the best. I have large chunks of time missing from my memory, and have severe memory issues. It seems to get worse as the years go by. I just hope they don't think I'm some type of hypocondriac, or something. I'm not sure what I need to do to request it, if there is some sort of list of symptoms or criteria I have to meet to get a scan? This is kinda embarassing.

I'm not a doctor but look at some of the pro boxers. They appear to have some brain damage from repeated trauma.

It sounds like it will take a scan to ease your mind. That's enough of a reason to get one.

If you don't have insurance, they would probably hesitate. And if you do, there may be certain steps you have to go through as far as diagnostics before they can do a scan that the insurance will cover. They are expensive.

Whether there is something structural going on or not, you are NOT nuts, a hypochondriac, or anything else but someone with symptoms that need an explanation.

The "chunks of time", are they as long as days, weeks or months?

Years....no joke. I don't remember my mother being pregnant with my sister, or my first 5 years of school, or people I went to high school with. I've been married for 8 years and still need to look at the certificate to remember my anniversary. I travel for my job, many times traveling the same roads, and can't remember being there last week. Heck, I can't remember the town I was in yesterday!

I have good insurance, but some things need pre-approved. I wonder if my occassional migranes could pass?

Trust me, its very frustrating, to the point of tears. I am constantly tired.

Anyway, thanx everyone, I'll bring it up and see what I can get done. I feel like such a nut-job sometimes. I want to rule out the physical issues then tackle it from a therapy point of view.

Again, thanx for the support. Love you all.

:( I don't remember much of my childhood either, just little snips like snapshots of moments.
I think mine is more of an emotional shutdown and I don't know why.
My sister often has to tell me stories of stuff that happened, and I don't even remember it when she tells it! :/

I remember more of my high school, but I don't remember names of people except one or two, I don't remember any teachers names (cept 1) and I'm not that far from high school, not that old.

:hugs Blocking sections of your childhood could be emotional or from physical damage. Did you have good friends in high school or mostly acquaintances? People that have been abused tend to not connect with others much during that stage of their life. Do you remember old friends well but the other people - barely?

Your memory problems with work don't sound emotional to me.
Tell the Dr. you had childhood abuse so they know which tests to run. Hope they can help. Ask them to check your levels of the neurotransmitters too. They are extremely connected with memory.
Good luck!
