Kel, that's odd. I would guess we have pretty similar soil. I have a trail from the porch to the chicken coop where they sprout because my kids spill them when taking treats to the girls. :p
Maybe you will find a new place and they will grow like crazy :)

Your garden is beautiful! I adore sunflowers, they are just so stinkin' cheerful!

Can you describe or get a better photo of that trellis that you have in the last photo? It looks interesting.

We don't have good luck with sunflowers because of a number of reasons....the soil is only part of it. Some of the big reasons are - slugs, free roaming chickens, and a multitude of wild birds... :/ :D

We're in zone 5a, Javamama. What is your zone there?

Kel- I'm in zone 6

The trellis is just t-posts stuck in at an angle and lashed together with twine at the top. Then we attached some wire fence to the sides. Easy peasy. Except DH bought the 2x4 fence andit's hard to reach through so I would recommend 4x4. It's working pretty well for the tomatoes, but I do have to tie them to it. It works well for cukes and would be good for anything that climbs.
I was going to use cattle panels, but we had no way to transport those. This was my inspiration: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/vertical/msg0622582022244.html
and this is what I ended up with because DH couldn't read my mind :p

There are so many things I'm going to change next year. I want my tomatoes in long, narrow beds and the trellis to be straight up and down.

Have almost enough green beans to can a batch of these dilly beans I keep hearing about. Can't wait! I always put dill on green beans, but I've never pickled any with it. mmmmm.

Caught 4 mice in the coop last night. They were getting so bold that they were coming out during the day. My chickens seem friendly with them. :p

Now have 2 new pullets laying.

Decided it's time to kick the diet and exercise up a notch after seeing a horrid photo of myself. 5-10 pounds should do it. Of course, I do the best exercise program in the world (other than old fashioned hard work around the home) It's called T-Tapp. There are try it out moves on the T-Tapp website here http://www.t-tapp.com/ It's perfect for melting away all the aches and pains of the day, keeping the body in wonderful alignment, and it's an all in one cardio, muscle toning, lymph pumping, mind building, hormone balancing, quick workout that I will keep talking about until you all are sick of it and finally check it out. :D
Plus, I learn so much cool health stuff in the T-Tapp forum that I never knew existed. It really opened my eyes to healing the body.

I love you sunflowers! I have one that volunteered itself right at my coop door. (Chickens missed that seed.) Poor plant leaves keep getting shut in the door, but it is flowering.

Never heard of T-Tapp. Might have to check it out.
