The chicks are adorable.

I had one in feb with a pasty butt. I mixed some sugar water and use a straw to feed the little guy. I did it every couple hours for a couple days. The little guy managed to hang on. I was surprised.

Those 16 are now in an outside coop and I bought 4 broad brested turkeys yesterday.:hide

Chickens are addictive!!!

Thanks! I'll keep in mind the sugar water. By the time I found out she had it she was already so weak she wouldn't drink. I tried giving her some save a chick water in a medicine dropper but it didn't work. I'm not having trouble with pasty butt anymore though I'm still keeping a close eye on them for it.
Chicken math got the best of me when I was placing my orders in January. I've got 12 ducks and 18 more chicks coming the week of April 7th. They had turkeys at the farm store yesterday. It's a good thing I don't have an extra brooder ready or they woulda went home with me. Probably going to get some next year. Gotta build them a pen first. Yeah, I'm joining the chickaholic club. Did I mention I'm also raising guineas in June? Those shouldn't count against me though. They aren't technically mine. I'm just brooding them for the neighbor.

Sometimes you lose a few it just happens.

I had a few guineas in Mo. I loved those little things. Hete in San Diego I dont think the neighbors would like them.

By the way what is Save a chick water?

Whoops. It's a brand of electrolyte powder that you mix with water. Shoulda put that to begin with but sometimes what's in my head doesn't translate when I'm typing.

More on the chickens:

So I ended up with a total loss so far of 3. I lost one to pasty butt and the other two just got weak and wouldn't eat or drink. Not sure what happened there but all the others are doing great. Here is their pics at one week old:

I separated them into two brooders so they could have more room. Going to but them back together in one big brooder in a couple of weeks. I'm getting another shipment of chicks the beginning of next week and a shipment of ducks a day or so after that. That's it for a little while. Until the guineas come in June :D
It was beautiful out today so me and the hubby worked on the chicken run. It's coming along nicely, and should be able to finish it the next nice day.

Hi, Jess. Sounds exciting! I love that style of greenhouse because it does well in the wind and you can add on to it easily. Do you have openings for air circulation? Birds get into mine sometimes and chomp small seedlings and pepper blossoms, so I've had to do double layers of chicken wire to the ends so I can have air going through, but not the clever birds and baby rabbits! :)
