Last year I mentioned about getting your seeds early so that you could get the veggies you want while seeds were still out there.

Again this year I will say that more people are putting in gardens than ever before. It would be best if you get your seeds now and start planing your garden.

Got my order to Baker Creek sent in, got my table & shop light ready to plug in, soil cups, seed starting mix, filtered water and plenty of compost.

I might just be set this year :D

I've always bought 6 packs at the local OSH or Home Depot. Now that I have a large garden and many gophers to feed (deep sigh), I want to start seeds myself. Where can I go read how to do this?

We have a sister site, easygarden. There's a link at the bottom of the screen. If you have a public library, I would recommend The Self-Sufficient Gardener by John Seymour or browse through their gardening section and see what tickles your fancy.

I have ordered a Baker Creek catalogue (thanks to everyone here who mentioned it :D), but it hasn't arrived yet. So this evening I went through their on-line site, picking and choosing. I'll be getting some seeds from them, and others from Territorial Seeds, as they have seeds more specifically suited to where I live. I'll be going right by Territorial Seeds on Friday, so want to figure out what I want from them, and pick it up while I'm there - save on postage that way

My seeds from Baker Creek arrived last week.

I don't have my seed starting mix yet, but everything else is ready. Well, almost ready. I still have to clean off the table to make room for all those egg cartons I intend to use for starting my seed. All my potted herbs and flowers are sitting on it for the winter. I should be able to move them back to the covered porch next week.

I keep experimenting and learning about saving my own seeds. One because I love the idea of being involved in the whole process and Two-so I have seeds just in case there are none available for purchase, either from high demand, crop failures, or whatever. I'm still working on those biennials like carrots, cabbage, etc-haven't yet had much success with these. These, and any others that strike my fancy that I don't already have :D , I'll be buying-again. I know of a local nursery that sells Territorial Seeds I haven't been there in a few years so I hope they still do. I better get my butt up there before they're all gone!

Good reminder, modern pioneer . . . by the way, I think you were the one who mentioned your method of growing potatoes last year and I just wanted to say "THANK YOU!" I grew both the biggest potato harvest yet and the biggest actual potatoes I have ever grown . . . although I honestly like the smaller potatoes a little better. But I won't complain. :)

I got my order turned around the same week I got my seed catalog. I mail ordered, though, so I expect there will be a delay . . . . In any case, I do save most of the more critical seeds from what I grow each year, so I would hopefully survive the worst case scenario.
