Everyone enjoys a little "crap" now and then. 90 percent of the time I eat whole grains, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, organic yogurt, wild caught fish, grass fed beef, etc.

Today I went to Dairy Queen and had a pecan pie blizzard. That was my lunch.

Hey, it's like a million degrees and it was soooooo tasty.

But a steady diet of foods like that would be the death of me.

I wonder all the time too what people are thinking when I'm standing in line to pay for my groceries. Carts full of prepackaged food. It's easy and people have been lead to believe it's affordable and "healthy". Don't even get us started on the low fat issues.
As for those Spaghettios, they may be preservative free but I'm sure they're still full of high fructose corn syrup, "flavorings" and lots of empty calories. I wish people would realize that it's NOT food. But, man do they taste good!
I don't have statistics but I'd say more than 50% of the kids in our town get free or reduced lunches at school. Talk about not being food! Processed chicken nuggets, rarely a fresh veggie or fruit and the kids throw those away anyway.... Snacks sent in are never homemade, always in individual packages. We've been duped into thinking this is the right way to feed our kids.
I know, I'm preaching to the choir. My kid gets teased for the food he brings to school. Yes, it takes more time to shop, prepare and send in a homemade lunch but it has made all the difference in our lives.

It is sad that people find eating healthy food to be quaint and amusing. Kids should not have to endure peer pressure when it comes to lunch. I feel for them.

my family eats some junk
we like it

but the balance of our foods is 85% great fresh foods and about 15% crap when we go on vacation, or maybe to a festival and for convenience sake also

hot dogs are easy to feed alot of people at a fundraiser etc
for me, eating a hot dog to give a donation to the fundraiser is fine, cause it would be my only hot dog eaten for the year LOL

I agree tho in general, u have a fundraiser like cancer, promotion of nutrition should be included maybe u should contact the fundraiser and mention it cause it would maybe open someone's eyes which is always a good thing to do
We also eat a little junk, like the other day I put some fries in the oven, when we had left overs I wasn't sure if i wanted to feed them to the chickens :/
A strange feeling, that I was prepared to feed them to my kids - but stopped and throught about it for the chickens. :he

My kids won't go near Soda, and they so often include that at school for "prizes" for doing well or helping etc.
My son helps clean up the lunch room now and then, the only rewards they have for kids doing that, is Candy and Soda :somad

The schools reward kids with candy and soda and then the government prosecutes parents with obese children.

Something is very wrong.

Nicole is doing Kinder school this year

I checked out the schools lunch it is quite healthy actually
they have a full salad bar with raw veggies which is nice cause Nicole loves salads and they of course offer the pizza lol which I know she will be eating but in general along with some crap served they always offered good foods in that lunch day menu also so I guess it is a matter of getting those kids onto good eating so lucky for me, Nicole prefers "real homecooked good foods" over just crap like nuggets etc so I smile on that one lol

ya gotta start them young to eat well vs. the kid that will "only eat chicken nuggests" for dinner and won't touch a real meal

ok , The heathy food we eat comes from my garden the rest I have to say is unheathly . Becouse it is cheaper, I have 5 kids , Hubby went from 20 per hr to 8 per hr :he I work at the school in the kitchen for 10 per hr but only 4 hrs per day we recive stamps and we can not afford to eat the way we wish to, yes the kids get free luches at school but I can tell u it is cheaper to feed them(700students) chicken nuggets than to prepare better meals at school. we try but if we go over budget we get yelled at and our hrs get cut, it is a no win situation .People I have talked to in cluding my Dr have said if healthy food was cheaper more people would eat that way I get upset:rant when people say I'm not a good mom becouse I feed my kids hotdogs and mac & chesse:hit atleast we have a roof over our heads ,colthes on our backs and food( may not be the best but it there) But I can also say this if given the chose my kids would reather have carrots ,apples than candy and chips

:hugs Sorry my rant turned personal on you. I didn't mean to hurt any feelings. And when I said junk I mostly meant snack junk like Twinkies, cheese puffs, soda... I wasn't thinking so much of hot dogs and mac and cheese. I had an idea of what I meant in my head and didn't do an adequate job expressing it. I should also add that the moms I'm thinking of with carts full of Twinkies and Coke also have their nails done and cell phones that cost 4 times what mine did. I don't understand it.
I do know that in my son's school when they changed the pasta to whole grain, the kids threw it away because they didn't like it.

mlynd.... There are so many families in your situation, that is why the judgemental tact is so wrong. We really never know the whole story, we don't know what financial difficulties others are facing.

Good for you for having a garden AND for chiming in here....we
all want to see children eating well, but it is not always easy. It is more than knowing how to feed them it is the ability to afford good
food that is the challenge for so many parents.
