Debbie, you know I am just a country boy who knows nothing about chickens other than eat their eggs and their meat.

I have seen my share of odd ball fowl at the county fair, and most of which belonged to folks who love their birds with all their hearts. I am positive and have read that you too are a chicken lover person. But me, well I just feed them and wait for eggs to pop out. My DD loves to talk to them, and might be just like you, a "chicken whisper."

I gotta tell ya, that is one odd/cute looking thing you have there. So what is breed, or is this one that you bred?

It does look cuddly I must admit.... :)

LOL MP....That my friend...is what they call a Naked Neck...or Turken, Banty. I have NEVER liked them...but, now that I have them...I guess they are ok! I guess I am sort of a chicken whisperer... LOL
Let me tell you a story...this happened 2 years ago...
My neighbor is a single parent, of 2 girls. She bought them a few chicks...even tho they didnt have a coop, or run for them...just a box on the porch. So...they raised these chicks...for a few months...when one day the little neighbor came over, carrying one of the birds. Now, this little girl is blond hair, blue eyes, and PURE tomboy, barefoot most of the time. :p So she comes over to me, I was in one of the coops..and says.." Miss Debbie, can you please help my chicken" I said...whats wrong with her honey?? She handed the bird to me and said...a dog got it. So, I took it in the shop, where I had a well lit surface to work on, and looked the bird over. I could hear breath sounds, and see puncture wounds on the birds back, and sides. Little Tony looked at me and said, please save Big Red....she is my favorite!! Oh boy...the pressure was on...so I lifted the birds wing, to look for more holes when I saw the innerds hanging out!!! :th I looked at Tony, with tears in her eyes...and I said, Oh honey, I dont know...she is pretty bad. Leave her with me, and I will see what I can do....KNOWING there was NOTHING I could do!! I gently placed the bird in a small cage, where she could not move around...and ran to the drug store for supplies. I had NO idea what to get...so I just started grabbing stuff...bandages...tape...wound cleaner..aspirin. I get home...and the bird is still alive...so I gently lay her on her side, and start cleansing the wound area...getting all the feathers and dirt off of the innerds...and gently tuck them back inside. :barnie Put on some neosporin, a gauze patch, and wrap her up tight. I Layed my hands on that birds side, and said a small prayer then placed her back in the small cage with water with electrolytes, and came in to boil some egg..added crumbles, vitamins..and took it back out to her. Every few days I would hold my breath when I went in there, and she would look up at me...blink, then eat her breakfast. It took about a week, but believe it or not....that bird made it!! Big red is now a very healthy hen, and a member of MY flock! :love A chicken whisperer?? I dont know...but I dont EVER want to go through THAT again! I love my chickens, and could talk to anyone about them for hours! I have a few different breeds...all in seperate pens to keep them pure...and they have a baby monitor, radio, and fans in the summer. Heated waterers, and lights on timers. ( this helps with predators with the radio, predators think there are humans in there) Yup, people around here call me the " Crazy chicken lady" I was in Wal mart once, when a gentleman and his daughter who had bought chicks from me once walked up and his daughter said...Look Dad, its the chicken lady. :/ :tongue I have a name!!! I dont mind really...I get LOTS of repeat customers...and when someone needs chickens and asks around...everyone sends them to me, even the feed mill guy, sends them to me. He asked for my phone number once..and said, I get lots of people wanting birds..so this way I can have them call ya! ;) One neighbors little girl bought a pullet from me last year, and won GRAND CHAMPION at the fair with her!! Oh, I will eat the old hens...they are not just for fairs and sales...but heck, might as well make SOME money on them...right? :D

"Chicken Whisperer" Thats what I meant... ;)

I had made a concrete deal with my DD before we got the chickens, and so she can only choose which ones will live to old age (2 of 8 birds). But that didn't go over well, she told me it was to tough for her to decide who would live because she loved them all. This conversation took place after we got the chickens, but before that it was all fine.

Being that I always listen to my childrens side of an issue, I considered her feelings and points of view. Like your neighbors little one, my DD was also full of tears. I try my best effort to honor my word when I tell people I am going to do something, many folks know I am a honest and dependable man. In the big picture I was putting her in a position where she decided if something should live or die. The original plan was to get them to lay eggs for us to eat, not to eat them. So in the end, I took control and have decided to let her keep the birds till they needed to be culled.

Sometimes its okay to go back on my word, and as far as DD feelings, she will not hold me accountable for making her decide who will live....

DEFINATELY OK to go back on your word.....on something like that! What a sweet child!! I could never make her decide who llives and who dies either. Maybe try to get some meaties...cornish cross...and let her know that they can not live long, because of thier breeding. They WILL develop "flop" Its where they get so big, so fast, they " flop over and die" Its a heart condition I think. This will help her with the transition of...chickens are to be eaten, eventually. My grandson was the same way when we got our peeps. When he was 8 we got meaties....He was told up front these were for the freezer. As they grew, and he helped cleaning thier pen...which I should warn you, they poop ALOT...he was ready to "do the deed" and was right there helping when cleaning day came. He actually wanted to pull the innards out. I love that boy!! Now when I get chicks...he asks up front...eggs, or meat?

I failed to mention how good of a job you did to help that bird, it nice of you to take in birds like you do. Great job with your grandson!! I think I would fall over howl laughing if a child asked me that, what a hoot!!

When I was little, we had a duck that found our pond, and soon we had a pair. They nested, the cat left them alone, and so they had 4 little ones. We were told to leave them alone, but Mom came in and mentioned one of them was swimming backwards. Of course then we all just had to go look. Sure enough, there it was looking backwards and swimming backwards. :gig

As they were older all of them left our pond, but Wrong Way Whooten so my mom named him. Mom made a space for him in the barn that winter, and the following spring he returned to the pond only to be trapped in the drainage pipe that was 60 something feet long. I think because he also walked backwards, he got himself stuck, poor bugger. He was mean and liked to snap at you, if you got to close to the pond he'd give chase.

Hey you melting out of the snow yet? Its melting here, but slowly :celebrate

Wrong Way Whooten.... :gig What a cute story, but a tragic end. :(
My grandson asked me the other day if I was going to be ordering more meaties. :/ It almost bothers me! He LOVES the butchering. When he asked about the sheep..I got really nervous. Of coure we will take any rams to BE butchered....we wont do it here. He was sorta dissapointed. Me thinks me created a monster. :/ Im just glad he is OK with it tho...I know I can count on ONE helper at least. Well, his mother likes to pluck. Are you kiddingme!?? Thats the WORST part!!! I however, being the nice person I am, "let" her do ALL the plucking. :D
As for saveing the chicken...I think it was merely luck, and prayers that saved it. Unfortunately everyone around here knows...if its "broke" bring it to the crazy chicken lady. Thats how I got April...one of the Ewes. She had a broken jaw, that never healed properly. So she cant eat too easily. She is a lifer here...but she better give me a few babies! ;)
ETA: The sun IS out, and I see dripping from barn roofs, and coops. WOOHOO!!! The melt is on!
