This is the type of whey that you can toss in the compost or better yet, to the hens or pigs. It is cooked, so it does not contain any useful good bacteria, but there are still some nutrients in it.

My mother used to put it in everything from bread to soup to mashed potatoes. I'm still traumatized! :p
Is there an uncooked way?

The bulk of the protein goes into the yogurt/kefir/cheese/whatever and not into the whey. Whey is mostly water and lactose. The protein shake whey is spray-dried at high pressure to concentrate it....it is a by-product of the cheese industry and although it seems high in protein, it is not a type of protein that your body can use, as the molecules are damaged by the processing.

I always say, if you need protein, skip the shakes and have a cheeseburger! I make my summer lunch shakes high protein by adding raw egg yolks, usually about 4 if I have plenty of eggs. Or I have a hunk of raw cheese with the shake as a good grab'n'go lunch.

yeah, I know about whey powder--dh was asking me theporperties of my kefir whey--what would be better to put in his smoothies, whey are kefir? I wasn't sure how muchprotein was in the whey, so I didin't know what to tell him.

kala, if you make kefir or yogurt and strain it with cheesecloth, you can get an uncooked whey.

Random thought of the day... I'm trying to read journals, catch up, learn about all of you...

I thought this topic title said "The thoughts of a topless hillbilly..." :ep

Maybe I need to go to bed!

I am enjoying all the journals, though I'm not posting (just lurking)

It actually makes a kind of tasty beverage, chilled, either plain or with some lemon juice and or mint added.
