I didn't get the Kindle, I ended up buying just a regular tablet from Walmart when they had a really good online deal. It was $100 and is very nice. Lots of free or cheaper books to be had. Almost everyone we know has a kindle and loves it. I got both my kids a tablet for Christmas too since they are big readers too. Its a good idea.
