1: How does it feel holding the knife in your hand? Does the handle fit you hand well.
2: Short, broad blades for general purpus will last you longer. Good look is of NO value.
3: Metal, do you want softer edge for easy and extreme sharpening or do you prefer a hard edge for longer lasting but never razorsharp?
4: Make sure the sheath is tight enough for the knife not to fall out when you run, sit or climb trees. At the same time it should be easy to draw your knifew with one hand only.
The look of a knife is NOT important. It is a tool, don't look at it, use it.
