I worked for awhile as receptionist at a very posh country club in S.A. During that time I did two courses in guest care and hotel reception. About 90% of the course work was on how to deal with difficult guests. Seriously, it seemed to me some days going on holiday brings out the obnoxious brat in people :smack Working in restaurants were similar, but not as bad thankfully!

I'll never forget the day I served a family of 4, the dad was an A-HOLE. Good grief, he was difficult and so rude. I served their meal and he called me back after a minute, handed me the pepper grinder and insisted I bring him one "that works". I took the grinder off him, took the lid off and handed it back to him without a word. I didn't have trouble from that table for the rest of the evening.
