We have the entire Foxfire series, multiple canning books, and my favorite (great memories of my grandparents), Jerry Baker's Great Green book of Gardening secrets.

The last is not really what I would call self-sufficient, but lots of low cost remedies

Foxfire books are interesting culturally too. i have a few of them and wish i'd been able to get the whole set when the library pulled them from their collection.

Jerry Baker stuff, not for me...

I can't read the part about using an egg to test the lye.

The illustration makes me smile! When I was a kid I volunteered as a docent at a museum. My favorite exhibit to work was the 1800's log cabin. There was one of those structures for making lye in the yard - that's how I learned about it!
