Just wanted ya'll to know I made my first batch of Laundry Soap and it's awesome! :celebrate I used SD's recipe and it turned out great! Thanks SD! I used a five gallon bucket and filled two recycled liquid Tide 2.2 gallon jugs and one half gallon for my dad. :celebrate

We also built a beautiful clothesline and got the posts in the ground today. :woot

Yesterday I adopted these Call ducks....so cute :love . I also bought 6 scovy ducklings from a friend (post pics later). The only problem is I have too many Call drakes. Can I send these guys to freezer camp? Has anyone eaten a call duck?

I'm glad you made the detergent, I love that stuff. I pass that aisle up the grocery store now with a smirk. Once in a blue moon I go down it for bleach or dryer sheets but that is IT.

I'd like to be able to avoid more sections of the grocery store. We could not believe the prices when we went this weekend. :ep

I agree there! I bought a gallon of regular commercial skim milk the other day and paid $4.10 a gallon!!

Once you get started making your own cleansers, laundry supplies and yes, even soap and beauty products - you will never go back! :D After a while you get spoiled by the low cost and superior quality of the homemade stuff.

I'm not sure that it is truly due to the laundry detergent, but my husband used to have a lot more problems with his skin with itchiness and such, that has really improved at around the same time that we started using it. I'm really not sure if that is what did the trick, but I used to buy the perfume-free detergents (you know, the ones where they charge you more to leave something OUT).

SD, I've always marvelled over that... How do they get away with charging so much more when they eliminate ingredients?! Colorant and scent are such minimal parts it's not like they have to fill in a large void with more expensive ingredients!

I'm SD, it is just short for savingdogs, my username. Some of us regulars have shortened titles for one another, sorry.

A good place for the recipe for laundry detergent is at Ohio Farm Girl blog:
http://adventuresinthegoodland.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
She has pictures and jokes and everything explained really well (her blog is great, too!).

It isn't really my recipe, I got this from someone at Backyard Chicken, on the Soapmakers Help! thread.

Bettacreek, I've eaten a low sodium diet for many years and have marveled at how much more expensive it is to NOT put salt in things. :(

Kingsfarm, check out the thread about How did you save money today? on this forum, that is an excellent resource for hundreds of money saving self sufficient tips, Nifty should make it into a book.

Oh it's crazy! I can't believe I ever spent so much for windex and clorox clean-up! Duh it's just clorox bleach in a fancy bottle which costs a ton more! Needless to say, now I just use vinegar:water and bleach:water in spray bottles. I'm still so excited about my laundry detergent! I just sent "Kingsfarm" a copy of the message you sent me with the laundry soap recipe. I hope that's ok? Thanks again!

Sure! It isn't really my recipe, but I'm sure glad I found it. We've been using it a couple years now.

I hung our clothes out on our brand new clothesline today and I love it!! It was peaceful and nostalgic pinning the clothes to the line. I washed two loads and while I was hanging the second load I checked the t-shirts from the first load and they were already dry! :ep I also used some vinegar in the rinse cycle (which I learned from my pals here) and my clothes were soft! The t-shirts actually folded up instead of standing up on their own! I'm very excited about the clothesline and had to share.

Now if I can figure out a way to use the sun as a water heater.....
