Medical Insurance???

DH told me last night that he is cancelling our insurance.
So by cancelling we will be getting another $1000 a month. Right now construction is so slow, he has only been working 2-3 days a week for the last 2 1/2 months. With me not working, it is making it hard to keep our ranch. He also is going to cancell the phone, as we hardly use it.
Does anyone know if you can still make 911 calls if you don't have phone service? DH says you can but wanted me to check. Our phone costs twice as much as our internet a month! I have skype on my computer so I will just have family members do it too. The only thing is the schools calling and the delay and cancellations for school, but I already check those online on the mornings I suspect it will happen. We HATE cell phones and they don't get reception where we live anyway. I want a cb bas station for the house, we have one in each car(although one needs to be replaced).

so sorry that times are rough that it has to be like that......scary isn't it but we will all survive!!

you be sure before you cancel that insurance....if you have any medical problems at all, for anything, you go now and have it covered.....are you sniffling? or anything..HA HA........but you know what I mean. Safe than sorry but if all is fine then it is best to just let it go and do your very own preventative care at home. take care of yourself best you can!

YES you can call 911 with your phone cancelled. Just keep your phone plugged up as usual....if emergency, just dial 911 and yes, it will go through.

BUT maybe, do you think just cancelling that big medical payment per month but be enough to relieve you before you have to cancel phone?

Sometimes we might not have to do it all at one shot. Cancel as you need to you know.

best of luck on all this but being a SS type, you will do fine. We all have done without and will have "without" sometime in our life and we do the best we can.....so hang in there!

Thanks for the info and support Karen. Yes, I agree, cancel as needed. DH comes up with ALL kind of things then changes his mind. DD told me to tell him to stop being such a girl! He changes his mind more than anyone I know. The only thing I really worry about is meds. We can always use our NRA prescription plan (we haven't ever used it) but I need my meds, right now all but my migrain meds are only $10.00. DH needs his cholesterol and blood pressure meds, his others are on workerscomp.

I have always heard that cell phone 911 calls will go through even if you don't have a calling plan but I never heard that is true for land lines- usually when land lines have been cancelled for me when I moved, there was no dial tone and no calling anything. The line has no service from the switching equipment to the house.
But I'm pretty out of date.

Could you cancel all extra parts of you phone service if you haven't already? I don't know if your area has party lines any longer but that used to be (in the dark ages) a cheaper service?

How is your computer serivce carried? Mine is dial up and no phone no computer.

Could you check with the medical insurance company to see if you can keep catastrophic coverage for much less money? Just because there's a company or union plan doesn't mean that other options are not available.

I'm sorry if you ahve already done all this- you certainly don't need to hear about it again.

For the insurance, I would suggest you check with a local independent insurance agent. Short term health insurance can run as low as $25/month per person, depending on your age. It is easier to get insurance if you are already covered.

Like ETR said, I think once you cancel your land line, it is dead and no calls can be made. But you should check with your phone service provider.

ut oh monica I might be confusing a cell phone with a landline.
you might not be able to call 911
now I don't know.....you can from a cell phone I guess?????not sure now so don't listen to my advice...LOL.....call the phone company and see if it will work or not.

and many, many times if you call anyone, any business, and say you are cancelling, due to money problems, they cut the bill.....yup, if you say you are cancelling they will do whatever they can sometimes to keep your business...even cut your bill so you might save and be able to afford that.


yikes on meds. meds can be horrible without prescrip plans. check into your other prescip. plan and see what is available on those benefits.

time to really see what is available to you.


yes it would be very hard for me to go without insurance...I can understand your hubbys reluctance....I would be too!!!!!

best to take your time and review everything before cancelling and all that.....it seems dire sometimes but moving slowly and thoughtfully on what is needed and not needed can mean less headaches down the road.

I will check with MCI, we have the neighborhood plan. It is one price for ALL long distance (stateside, of course) for like $54.00, but with all the taxes it brings it up to over $70. DH fought with them when he signed up, they said we HAD to have all these extra things because it came with it. We don't like ANY of the extras. He got them to take them all off.We just have local and long distance.

Does anyone know if farmer's insurance has health coverage, that's who we have all our insurance through. I will check on the catastrophic and short term.

We have a dish outside that the internet co. put up, I don't know if the phone is connected or not, DH takes care of all that. I get real ditzy when it comes to electronis. DGD got a game that hooks up to the tv for Christmas. For the life of me, I cannot get it to work. I plugged it into everything I could find on all of our components with no luck. I will ask DH.We either need the phone or the internet, I would prefer the internet, I HATE the phone.

No one calls us anyway, we sometimes go several days with the phone not ringing at all. We don't make many calls either.I call DH at work like 10 times a day though.

In my area, you can just have local calling with no long distance- is that what you're thinking of dropping? Because that would certainly allow you to call 911 with just local service.

Sounds like you have either satellite or local wireless for your computer- no phone line needed for that.
