Crazy storm last evening with wind and driving rain--looked like a hurricane (or how they look on tv anyway--I've never experienced a real one). Winds came up super strong around 3pm and the rains started about an hour later and lasted for about an hour.

Fortunately we had pulled all the garden tomato plants (tomatoes are all ripening indoors now) a few hours earlier when we got home from church so the only things left in the garden are the corn, a few flowers that were planted in between various veggie squares (3 types of Marigolds, Nasturtiums, some Alyssum, a pink Begonia that my daughter received as a gift, and some Bells of Ireland), the cukes that haven't done squat, and the pumpkins (which are still small--about the size of a softball).

The greenhouse tomatoes are still going strong so we're leaving them out for a few more weeks, the greenhouse didn't seem affected by the winds/storm at all so we are really happy about that--should do just fine staying up all winter. Also leaving the bell peppers, celery, and a few interspersed onions in there as well for as long as possible--the peppers have been small this year but tasty, and we've been breaking stalks off the outer edges of the celery for cooking and it still keeps growing so we'll let it continue to do its thing.

And the apples are all red now so it will soon be time to harvest those as well :)

Canning shelves are filling up nicely and I keep going down just to look at them (and figure out what else we still need to do). Next up is applesauce, apples, chutney, and more meat and convenience meals. We continue to add meat and convenience meals all throughout the winter months, but the busy canning season is winding down now--haven't run two canners at the same time for a couple of weeks now because our more recent batches have been smaller.

Feeling pretty ready for winter, need to do some "fall cleaning" and organizing indoors after a busy summer but our yard and gardens are looking pretty good after this weekend. Hope fall lasts us a while, I love this time of year :)

FROST last night--lawn is crunchy to walk on and the edges of the pumpkin leaves are curled, but the corn seems to have come through just fine. Everything in the greenhouse looks fine as well, but I haven't opened the door yet and won't till it warms up a bit more. We put buckets of hot water in there next to the tomatoes, peppers, and celery late last night before going to bed in order to keep the temp up and we think it worked well. We also have lots of bricks and cinder blocks in there acting as heat sinks.

Wow - frost! Glad your plants came through ok.

We did have a low of 61 this morning.

I'm going to have to start thinking of ways to warm the wipes that I use on the goats udders in the mornings. Red did NOT appreciate a cold wipe down to start the day!

Is this an early frost for you? Sounds like your greenhouse is working out great. Crazy to think fall is upon us already. Well at least for most folks. Hopefully we will escape the Indian Summer here. We sometimes hit 110 in mid to late Sept.

No, not early--pretty typical. We can get light frost anytime from mid-August onward, it's more usual anytime after Sept 1.

The flowers left in the garden beds seem to have come through just fine, as did the corn. I left a couple of flowering tomato plants in pots on the deck that froze, but we had already picked all the actual fruit off. Pumpkins look sad, pretty sure they didn't make it, but we weren't expecting big things from them since they had only got to softball size. Cukes are dead too, but they never fruited for some reason--lots of flowers, and we have lots of pollinators.

Greenhouse plants all came through just lovely :) Just went out and picked all the tomatoes, the ones that are still a bit green will ripen just fine indoors, and all of the mature peppers. We'll see if the flowers and tiny tomatoes do anything over the next while. Left the onions and celery to grow for now.

Frost! We are still getting heat waves  But it will take a dramatic drop and frost in a month. :p We usually have like a two week fall, its hot and steamy one day then we are having flurries and hauling wood :p Such is life in Appalachia

Our daytime temps are still very pleasant--high 70s--but our night temps have been cool for weeks now. We've only had one "official" night where we dipped below freezing, but that night plus the last two almost-freezing nights have taken out my corn :(

Picked the apples yesterday and got about 15 lbs, not bad for the second year with these trees!

Congrats on the apples! Still pretty hot and steamy here. We've got rain in the forecast for the next few days so the clouds are helping keep the temps down. I'm soooooo ready for a break from the heat!

Say it isn't so. I am not ready for frost. There are so many tomatos to can up and some of the local gardens north and west of mine got hit last night as well. My garden is closer to the moutains so I usually get a little longer but first frost always makes me freak out. I need more time. :fl
