This is PITA (Pain In The A**) First of the late hatch, four days late.

90% of the time PITA falls asleep almost instantly when I hold it.

It has a little white collar I couldn't get a good pic of for the life of me.

My incubator was too dry and this little one ended up needing a lot of intervention. It couldn't get its head past the inner membrane. I didn't pick up on this until it was pretty exhausted. I ended up taking the top half of the shell and membrane off in stages and then letting it finish absorbing the yolk and kick out on its own. Well almost on its own, the right foot ended up getting stuck to the shell and is still a tad bit weaker than the left. PITA is doing good otherwise, eating a tiny bit, drinking on it's own, trying to jump out of the box and follow me around. Took PITA outside for about ten minutes, it ate a tiny bug and tried to eat every plant in sight lol, couldn't quite nibble anything off though. It cries like crazy when I walk away! :th Its finally taking a nap! I kind of hope its a girl cause I don't need another drake and I would like PITA to be a pet/breeder/layer.

On a side note, it turns out that the drake I have only accepts the ducklings because he is afraid of their mother! I was out fixing their pond the other day and the broody was so busy trying to intimidate me that the drake thought he saw an opening an snatched a duckling. The broody and I both went after him, she made him drop the duckling and I caught him by the neck (I was tempted to wring it right then and there :somad) and separated him from the others for a while. Haven't had any trouble since.

Yeah, I'm dying to have baby birds again. It doesn't make it any easier when I have a four year old who reminds me several times per day to "check the eggs, see if any babies have hatched yet"

It's a khaki campbell, blue swedish cross. You can see its parents rears in the pic I took of the outdoor ducklings. It's the blue swedish ducks first clutch and she started setting before she was done laying, so I had to rescue a few late hatchers. Gonna have Cayuga, campbell crosses later if nothing goes wrong. And a few pekin, campbell crosses. It will be really interesting to see what colors come out of these mixes! So far the ducklings outside are piebald black and yellow with the exception of one who is grey and yellow. PITA is an odd ball all around ;)

I don't know about that. I think baby bunnies when they get to a certain age are extremely cute as are kids and chicks. Maybe we should just say they're one of the cutest?

I've got one humming away with 72 eggs in it right now. That sucker can hold over 200 eggs... Trouble, in other words!
