We are looking at ways to slow the runoff down...as it flows on it's way to a pond about 2 properties away. We have moderate drought issues, and we feel it would be better to not only utilize the rain barrels..(which we do), but also have some catchment of some sorts. 1 acre...with the well almost right in the middle....I think would limit our choices for some things.

I know a lot of things cannot be built or kept with in so many feet of a well. SS is becoming a necessity, as well as maintaining our clean potable water. The soil is sandy, on top of clay, with spots of organic topsoil and the one ditch line through the middle. We have the road ditch line up front....and it directs a portion of run off towards the back ditch.

Cattails....just another one of our experiments...to best manage and utilize whatever we can from this 1 little green acre in South Carolina.

Actually, planting any tree can help to dry things up. All trees will take the water out of the soil, and put it back in the air. You can also plant poplars. Not only will they grow in wet areas, but the leaves can be eaten by livestock. You'd just need a way to protect them until they got large enough. Some hybrids will grow quite rapidly, which is good if you're also wanting them for shade. And while I don't normally recommend hybrids, w/poplars, I will. Many poplars will come up not only from seeds, but also from roots. They can become a nuisance. I don't think the hybrids do this.

Not trying to dry things up...just slow the run-off of rain water. We want the water to stay longer....to soak into the ground. We want a catch basin, or a pond would be nice. A rain garden might be feasible...but not wanting to spend money on something like that at the moment. Things went from tight to way tight for this first half of he year.
Unfortunately....not having access to a piece of heavy equipment...to dig a pond..or smooth out the ditch for a rain garden....I'll have to work with what I have. A ditch.

Monday Monday!!..la la...la la la....

I'm tired already

Got the chicken in the crockpot...now to make some home made noodles. After that, change the bed linens and put up the clean laundry. Then, off to the DMV when they open, and treasurers office for auto paperwork. Got my legal doc in Friday afternoon, too late to do it then.
Then, back home to make a phonecall and photocopy another doc to send in the mail tomorrow. After that...take an alteration to a ladies house for a fitting...and drop off the trash at the dump.

Whew!! I know I forgot something in there!! :frow

Oh yeah, take care of the chickens.. chicken chores :D

Pffft. It's a Federal Holiday. I totally forgot about it, and I didn't see it mentioned online anywhere this morning. :he So, I went all the way down to the DMV. Locked up tight. I noticed the post office parking lot was empty, but this being a small town, an empty parking lot is to be expected now and again. So...I come back home and make my noodles. Guess I'll putter 'round the ranch for the day. I don't even know if the dump will be open this afternoon. I know they close for some holidays.

So....noodles are mixed..and sitting for a bit. I'll run them through the noodle machine about 11...then go out and transfer some of my rain water over to the IBC. It is too wet to move the other one to it's new spot. I'll have to wait for Wednesday to do that...as I will be gone ALL DAY tomorrow.....doing tomorrows stuff as well as todays postponed errands.

Grumble...grumble...bitch ..bitch :barnie

That's what I get for being unemployed, no kids at home..and not observing holidays :barnie I am sooooo out of the loop! Oh, and no TV either. The only one we have is in the bedroom, and it stays off during the daytime. I don't watch TV....DH likes to when he comes home ...eats supper...then we head down to put our tired legs and feet up.

The chicken in the crockpot smells good at least. :bun
