I didn't see a specific place for introductions, so am posting it here. I finally joined after lurking here for a couple of months. You people are a riot! I have laughed myself silly on some of the treads. I need some help with a couple of things, but I will post them in the appropriate forum.
We have been married 47 years and have been living in the same house for over 40 yrs, in the same small town in South Dakota, just 2 blocks from where I grew up. DH was a farmer and we farmed the first few years we were married. My FIL had sheep, pigs, cows, and chickens. I had chickens and bottle fed and raised one heifer calf. Her name was Sally. She was my pet. She thought I was her momma. In those days we sold eggs to the "egg man" who came every week. I also raised roosters for butchering and sold those. My chicken money was my grocery money.
The biggest mistake we made was moving into town when DH decided we would never be able to raise a family with farming. Farming was beginning to change to big grain farms and we did not own any land, just rented for shares. I have never been able to talk DH into moving back to the country. We have had opportunities, but he won't budge. I inherited 78 acres from my parents, so that is where I "practice homesteading." I gave DD1 2.5 acres several years ago. She put up a house moved there. She takes care of my horse. There was still an old machine shed out there and an old rotted chicken coop. We really had to clean up the place and we put in a lot of fence. I rent out the rest of the land.
We had a garden out there this year. We hadn't gardened since my mom died and we gardened at her house. I bought a pressure canner this year and have been having a lot of fun with it. You all have inspired me with canning and fermenting. I actually made sauerkraut. It is absolutely delicious.
Sorry this is so long. As you can see I tend to ramble. I am going to go post my questions now.
